Multiple sources are reporting that charges against Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson and defensive back Hootie Jones have been dropped due to "insufficient evidence."

Both players were arrested back on May 16th for possession of marijuana and illegal possession of a stolen firearm. District Attorney Jerry Jones confirmed the news on Monday with this statement via Knoe.com:
quote:

Jerry Jones cited insufficient evidence in proving who was in possession of the gun and the drugs, thus, he is dropping the charges.

Jones says, "I want to emphasize once again that the main reason I'm doing this is that I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and teenage years, working and sweating, while we were all in the air conditioning."

When my 2 boys get caught with things they aren't supposed to have I always let them use the "It was his stuff" argument to confuse me and then let them off without any punishment.

"The arrest occurred early Tuesday morning in a parking lot of a local park. According to the police report, officers pulled up to Robinson's car ar 2:33 a.m. smelling marijuana. When approaching the vehicle, officers spotted a handgun on the lap of the passenger. A bag of marijuana was also observed on the driver's side floorboard. The stolen handgun was located under Robinson's seat." This equals "insufficient evidence"????

I'm all for not wanting to ruin the lives of college athletes for a nonviolent crime. The lack of any formal punishment here is not setting a very good precedent. While I'm sure the coaches are running them ragged, these guys should consider themselves very lucky. The lack of evidence claim is absolutely ridiculous.

They'll be punished. Saban is old school. So they'll have to pick out a switch.

double down - Our country is immersed in debates about firearm safety with many crying for increased laws, yet when two drug using thugs are caught with a stolen firearm they are let off with ZERO penalty because they reportedly have been working and sweating (while playing a SPORT they choose to play. It is about ethics and morals. It is what 2nd Amendment supporters like myself have been talking about for some time. Enforce the freaking gun laws on the book with max penalty and you wont need any additional laws to reduce gun crimes.

I framed houses for 8 years, before and during college. Does this mean that I get to break the law in West Monroe because I didn't always work in an office? This DA has no integrity and should be punished using the violation of ethics statute of Louisiana.

It would be interesting to review all similar cases this judge has been involved with over the past two years. I'm guessing reviewing the history of how he has handled each case would reveal an interesting story.
