While speaking at Big Ten media Days this week, USC head coach Lincoln Riley praised Alabama for the way they have handled scheduling in years past. Per SDS:
quote:

“‘Bama was ahead of the curve for years, I thought, on how they scheduled in the non-conference,” Riley told reporters Wednesday, per On3. “They would occasionally hit the marquee non-conference game, they’d play two other not-very-good teams, they’d play one late so they got essentially a little bit of a bye week there late in the season. They didn’t schedule for their fans – they scheduled to win championships.

“My hope is we can do the best thing, schedule to win championships that includes a rivalry game for all that comes with that and all that it means. But if you get in the positions, you’ve got to make a decision on what the priority is.”

Is this his way of using Bama as the reason he tried to get out of USC’s contract with LSU?

Alabama typically played a marquee P5 non-conference game. Most top teams never did that. Alabama almost missed the playoffs last year bc of a loss to Texas... Not sure how that helps a team's chances

"They would occasionally hit the marquee non-conference game"

Lol Bama essentially started the trend of scheduling one major P5 non conference opponent each season (18 years ago with Florida State) while most everyone else was still scheduling shite Sandwich U and the FCS Horned Possums. And Riley bailed on OU because he knew he'd be toast in the SEC.

LSU Ohio State 1980 1981 or somewhere around then. This been going on for a while

Yeah, there was a lot of that in the '80s too. Bama v PSU, Auburn played Texas, Georgia vs Clemson and UCLA, Tennessee vs USC

So basically "I'm a huge pussy, and I'm gonna ignore the fact that Bama played in the SEC"
