Sloan played for the great "Bear" Bryant and served as Joe Namath's backup, famously filling in for the future Hall of Famer in the Sugar Bowl before Bama won it all in 1964.

He'd go on to become a consensus All-American and win a national championship of his own the following year — later being drafted into the NFL in the 11th round by the Atlanta Falcons.

Sloan would eventually return to Tuscaloosa as an assistant to his mentor which led to coaching stints at Florida State, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Mississippi and Duke.

The Austin, Texas native came back to Bama once again in the late 80s to serve as the school's athletic director; a role he also played at North Texas, UCF and Chattanooga.
