The University of Alabama is going after local Tuscaloosa bakery, Mary’s Cake and Pastries, for selling elephant cookies with a script A. The bakery received a cease and desist letter, and a request for documentation of how many $1.75 cookies had been sold so Alabama and CLC could collect damages. Bakery owner Mary Cesar said...
quote:

"How the hell do you put a hologram on a cookie?" Cesar said, referring to the label on CLC merchandise signifying it's an officially-licensed product. "I didn't think it applied to temporary baked goods. We're not talking a permanent image. We're talking a cookie that's going to be gone and has a hand-drawn thing on it."

They should make them and give them away. For example, you buy 1 chocolate chip and 1 sugar cookie then you get a free elephant 'A cookie.

Meh, Bama can't claim rights to everything shaped like an elephant. I would fight it.

This type of shite portrays Bama in a negative light. It's a baked good that I doubt the University itself is selling. No one is buying these, getting them autographed and putting them on ebay. If they were smart, they would instead invest in the bakery and establish good business relationships with local area shops. I understand the legality aspect in that they need to protect their registered Trademark but come on man. At the least, the bakery could put a little (R) or TM next to the logo but no "damages" should be collected as Bama was receiving free exposure of their brand in a beneficial capacity. Get it together, it's a University who's function is to educate the youth and send them into the world to benefit the overall community. Modern cut-throat business tactics are reverting us back to a Medieval times mentality with advanced technology. It's weak and sad.

No I'm not mad.

They are capitalizing on using the Alabama mascost/script A to sell more. They knew what they were doing.
