Bobby Bowden Talks About When Florida State Almost Joined SEC
Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports
In a Q&A with 247Sports, former Florida State coaching legend Bobby Bowden confirmed that the Seminoles almost made a move to the SEC instead of the ACC back in 1992...
quote:

“They did want us, they did invite us to join the SEC. Everybody thought we would join. In fact, I thought we would but our administration — the president and others — wanted the ACC, which really was better for us,” Bowden said. “It would have been hard wading through that SEC. Too many good teams in there, boy. Oh, gosh. Oh, that would have been some great ball.”

In other words, FSU didn't have the chest to compete at the SEC level.

Bowden admitting the ACC is a joke.

FSU would have competed just fine. Yes they’d have lost more games. But if you replace FSU with almost any team the SEC over his tenure, you’re schedule would have gotten much worse. Florida would be the only one that would likely get easier obviously.

Back then NCAA basketball revenues put football revenues to shame. And the ACC got the biggest shares. Hootie Ingram, who was a former FSU AD, told me at a Tide Pride gathering in 1992 that FSU would receive $2M more per year in the ACC than in the SEC.
