Nashville Regional Statistics

Vanderbilt Commodores (42-19, 20-10 SEC, won the SEC East)
D1 Baseball RPI--10
BA: .289 (65th in D1)
ERA: 3.08 (23rd)

Radford Highlanders (43-14, 20-4 Big South, won the Big South)
D1 Baseball RPI--15
BA: .294 (42nd in D1)
ERA: 3.71 (75th)
Record Against Top 25/50: 4-6, 4-6
Rotation:
Michael Boyle (2.27, 10-2, 85 Ks, 35 BBs, 99.1 IP, .219)
Dylan Nelson (3.97, 6-3, 53 Ks, 27 BBs, 81.2 IP, .277)
Mitchell MacKeith (4.41, 7-4, 41 Ks, 17 BBs, 81.2 IP, .286)

Their two best pitchers are Daniel Bridgeman, who we might see in mid-relief (0.63, 6-2, 23 Ks, 10 BBs, 28.2 IP, .181) and their closer, Ryan Meisinger (1.75, 5-0, 15 saves, 62 Ks, 7 BBs, 36 IP, .186). Their closer seems legit, but his inning total would suggest that they won't bring him out early if they start falling behind. As a staff, they throw twice as many strikeouts as walks, but other than Meisinger, they don't seem to have anyone that is a threat to strike out the side. They've also hit 43 HRs over the year, and are slugging at a .434 clip. They are going to have to try to outhit us with four guys hitting over .320 in the lineup. Patrick MArshall is the big threat with 12 HRs and a .622 slugging %.

Indiana Hoosiers (34-22, 12-10 B1G, 7th in B1G)
D1 Baseball RPI--33
BA: .276 (125th in D1)
ERA: 3.41 (53rd)
Record Against Top 25/50: 5-3, 14-7
I got busy

Lipscomb Bisons* (39-18, 13-8 Atlantic Sun, 2nd in A.S.)
D1 Baseball RPI--71
BA: .278 (118th in D1)
ERA: 3.66 (72nd)
Record Against Top 25/50: 1-0, 5-4
*As an establishment of higher education, Lipscomb should be ashamed of itself.

The ninth inning by Swanson was one of the best performances by a single player I've ever seen. It's just not fair.

His solitary tweet after the game shows that he's not just amazing on the field.

"That one was for you Dai-Jon."

The three big plays from last night. I'm glad we still have Reynolds for another year. He's incredible defensively.

After two games, our staff is averaging 13 Ks per nine in regional play

Well that 21-0 was fun. Memorable game at the Hawk with so many players playing their last games at home.

Our side of the bracket has its Supers Saturday through Monday. So our Omaha bracket will start a day after the other side as well. Let's hope the extra day doesn't cool off the bats

Jon Burton (channel 5 sports guy) was just reporting on Vandy baseball and it looks like he is sporting a poop tooth. Was it real, or just the way the lighting was reflecting?

I'm feeling good about this weekend. Of course Carson getting us off to a good start will be key. I think the bats will continue to be hot and I think we win this in 3.

I haven't seen starters for game 2. Is Corbin going to start Buehler if we lose Game 1? Duchene is scary good, and he's a soft tossing lefty. Our bats might die with a quickness tomorrow. We still win the next two. No matter what though, Dores in three.

D1 write-up of the game. Downplays how well the Dores hit the ball against Illinois, but fairly calls out the two controversial calls. I didnt like what Kendall did. I'd rather not score the run there than flop and hope for a favorable call a la Miami.

quote:

Fresh of a 21-0 regional-clinching victory, Vanderbilt tore through Illinois like a rocket sled demolishing a school bus full of watermelons: They hit relentlessly, ran the bases aggressively, fielded the ball cleanly and brought to bear a level of starting pitching that their opponent is simply not used to seeing.

quote:

The all-conquering Illini, surrounded by a crowd of 3,605 — most of them wearing orange and shouting — enduring a merciless, clinical beating from invaders from the south, dressed in prison pajamas from the 1930s.

quote:

here are losses — even double-digit losses — in which little things go wrong and the situation snowballs, and despite the score, the game would’ve actually turned on one play. This was not one of those games. Two controversial calls didn’t go Illinois’ way, and neither of them mattered: Duchene plunked Tyler Campbell in the third inning, and Campbell might or might not have made an adequate effort to get out of the way; in the fifth, Jeren Kendall was awarded home after getting caught in a rundown and juking (I believe) out of the baseline and into Jason Goldstein. At the risk of angering the fallacy of the predetermined outcome, the next batter after Campbell was hit grounded out to end the inning without further scoring, while Kendall’s run was Vanderbilt’s seventh of the game. And besides, you don’t lose a game by 13 runs because the umpires screwed you.

I disagree about Kendall. He didn't "flop". He absolutely initiated the contact, but it wasn't like he brushed into the catcher. They ran straight into each other.

Can you argue that the catcher was out of the base path? It was close, and I wouldn't have been upset if he got called out. Jeren made the umpire make a decision. It was a close one, and it was risky, but it was still a heads-up play to recognize that the catcher had not cleared out and was at least close. Just like a fastball on the edge of the plate, you make the umpire do his job. This time, it went our way. I hope he (and Carson justifiably staring down the umpire 4 or 5 times) didn't burn up any goodwill with the umpires that we have.

So it looks like Jay starts today for Illinois as they are desperate to extend their season. The key will be the top of the 1st. Phillip can't have one of his slow starts where he struggles to find his command early and is down 2-0.

It's going to be a windy day, and blowing out to right as far as I can tell. Should be great for us against Jay. Sustained winds at 30 mph now but calming to a pleasant 15 at game time.

Good to hear. It was blowing that way out to left yesterday, which would have been terrible for Phil.

Man, yesterday was a really special day. It doesn't get much better than that. So happy for those guys. Obviously for the guys that got drafted but how about Pfiefer. What a gutsy performance to get the Omaha-clinching win. Amazing story.

Their ace that we'll see on Sunday is the real deal. Probably a slight edge on the mound and we have the better lineup. They'll try to small ball us to death. We just faced the best-non Carson pitcher in the country and hit well. If the bats are close to that performance, we should advance.

After the first game I was a bit shocked by the low score. Also, glad Cards got knocked out so I say bring on CSF.

I think "spoiled" is the word you're looking for.
