2016 Roster
For subjective reasons, I always look for 94+ in the rankings (high 4 stars and outside of quarterbacks... this is a reliable measure for consistent top performers on a team).
2016:
7 freshmen (94+)
7 sophomores (94+)
5 juniors (94+...Ramsey makes 6)
1 senior (grad transfer Maurice smith 94+).
That makes 14 underclassmen.
6 upperclassmen.
The good news is that we are replacing our 1 senior with 7 rising sophomores to give us 12 upperclassmen.
And we are stacking the future with 8 players 94+ (excluding Fromm). So another 15 underclassmen.
The trick for 2017 will be the offensive line. Isaiah Wynn will be our only offensive linemen (upperclassman 94+). If we can't run the football... we will be playing a lot of tight ballgames against lesser talented opponents. And the better team doesn't always win those close games.

Kirby's done a good job with his recruiting, and I'm hopeful that results on the field will show improvement next year. But one area where we still need an upgrade is wide receiver. Even our few highly ranked WR recruits have struggled since AJ Green. Hopefully Holloman will live up to his billing.

Are the ones printed in Black still enrolled at UGA?

No hyperlink means that they do not have a players page at 247 (not highly recruited if at all)

I think those are walk-ons.

The only highly ranked wr on 2016's roster was Godwin.
TE had a freshman with Nauta.
And great tailbacks to throw to with chubb/sony.
Holloman/Swift will be needed in the passing game.

We have enough pieces on the roster that a great coaching staff should be able to produce at least a pretty darn good offense.
2017 is the year we will find out a LOT about our staff.

Tough to run the football without talent on the OL.
Tough to be a great offense when you can't run the football.
I have concerns about 2017 because of the OL. We need 5 players to step up bigtime.

Some of the walkons have a link. It just depends on the kind of interest they had as a recruit to have 247 develop a page dedicated to their recruitment.

I don't know. We may have 2 true freshman tackles. Almost certainly 1. Not a recipe for success in the SEC.

Really just 2. You have 3 proven capable starters, 2 of which I think are pretty darn good. It should improve over the course of the year and DEFINETLY shouldn't be as bad or worse than 2016.

Agree to disagree.
No one was capable in 2016. At least none were consistent. All of them looked awful at times.

I thought Sims and Wynn (at his natural guard spot) showed flashes of being pretty good, and you can live with Gaillard being in your starting 5.
We really just need two guys to step up at tackle. Hell, one of our best seasons ever had a freshman at tackle in 2012.

I couldn't bear to go back and watch our 2016 games a second time, but my first impression was that a lot of our OL problems were because defenses didn't respect our passing game. Every defense game planned to stop us from running, and our offensive coaches and a freshman qb never could make the defenses pay. At least not enough to make them back off. It'll be the same next season until we can consistently burn an over aggressive defense.

Wynn got manhandled on the inside by the better defenders that he faced.
He's too small to handle NFL talents on the interior.
I've read some analysts say that Sims was the worst player on the line last season (up there with Kubs).
These guys were not consistent. And a bad day was awful.

Some teams loaded the box. And some teams didnt (UF, MU, Vandy).
The point is that we were not a good running team against either situation.

He graded out better than Wynn or Sims per the analysts I read.

2017 was Kirby's first year of recruiting. He hit it out of the park. The next two years of recruiting should tell the whole story. To be an elite program, you need two things. Elite recruiting and elite coaching. One without the other is what Georgia has been doing since the early 80's.
I hope Kirbs can do both.

I prefer looking at 95+ instead of 94.
