That frick should be fired and banned for that call. You don't make a call like that unless you're positive.

It was a bad call, yes, but rigged? Do you think the ref knew UNC would recover and would have to re-kick?
What was their rigging plan on the second attempt? No call was made there...guess they're lucky Clemson got it.

Exactly. I mean there were a couple of players near the line on the near side of the field from the camera perspective but no one looking down that line could objectively make that call.

Terrible call, but there is no reason that this play should not have been reviewable.
I don't like how replay has slowed down the pace of the game, but since it's not going anywhere; offsides, intentional grounding, forward pass beyond the LOS, should all be added to the list of plays that are eligible for an official review.

Wasn't a botched call. The call was illegal formation for a player being outside of the hash mark and not having enough player on the other side of the kicker.

Please explain. In which case, why did they call it off-sides and not illegal formation?

WRONG. There were 4 men on the other side of the player that kicked the ball. Also, the call the ref made was OFFSIDES

I can't get a picture of it on my phone right now but if you go back and watch the video you'll see on the far side of the field there are only 3 players lined up. There must be a minimum of 4 players lined up outside the kicker on each side for the formation to be legal. There also may not be any players lined up outside the nine yard mark and the last player on the near side was lined up outside of the 9 yard mark which is what drew the illegal formation penalty I believe. I'm not sure why the announcer mistakenly called an offsides penalty, but I've spoken with someone who attended the game and he said they corrected the call over the loudspeaker after.

The crew chief mistakenly announced an offsides penalty. Check the official NCAA rule books, I'm a GA high school referee. It was an illegal kicking formation.

Trash none of what you said is true..at least 4 guys on the far side of the kicker and nobody more than 3-5 yds from the line..one guy from the far side goes back 5 yds as the kicker makes contact..

This is the first I've heard of illegal formation. If it was illegal formation they would have thrown the flag immediately. The ref didn't throw it until well after the kick. I'm with the OP. Here's more:

Easy to see the confusion if you look at a still. but clearly there are minimum 4 players on each side
