From 960 - Kirby when asked if Stetson Bennett could possibly start long term: “Right now he’s the guy and he’s done a good job preparing for what we want to do.”

Elsewhere, one of the "insiders" said that there actually wasn't a plan to play JT Daniels much against Auburn, if at all. He added that a less mobile QB (especially with the protective knee brace) isn't what you want when you are still getting your OL comfortable.

Bennett is doing what he needs to do regardless of the lack of NFL measurables.

Yet it doesn't seem like Smart ever previously viewed Bennett as a real contender to be "the" guy at QB. Does he now? Or do we still see Daniels and Mathis in the mix for real this season?

He will be the guy til he struggles for a half. That may never happen if he keeps playing well. He made some legit plays against Auburn, he was like a discount Baker Mayfield out there at times.

Stetson was always Kirby Smart’s secret weapon.

Unfortunately, Arkansas turned out to be so unexpectedly good that we had to pull a “Tua” in the opening game of the season.

I think deep down Kirby respects the kid and loves having him on the team but also knows deep down you need a better athlete at QB if you're going to win a natty. That's why he wasn't 100% committed to Bennett when he was asked that question at the post game presser.

Y'all realize that Mayfield and Manziel won the Heisman and had all time great college QB seasons, right?

Did anybody say anything about the Heisman? The mailman's play so far has been dam good.

That's why I said the discount version...but then again Mayfield was a walk on himself back in the day and look at how that ended up. I doubt Stetson is the second coming of Mayfield but he's got a gamer mentality and makes good throws on the move. We will find out a lot more about him the next 2 weeks.

Saddest thing I heard Herbstreit say on the broadcast was a quote from Stetson.

“I know I am not what GA fans want at QB”

Would love to see him lead us to a natty and then he gets his own movie made about him a la Rudy.

There is no reason to start anyone but Stetson going forward, until proven otherwise. With that being said, I do think there is opportunity for Monken to utilize Dwan’s skill set in some packages.

or the fact he literally didn’t get reps when Newman and co. was around.

I don’t know how much more we can/could expect from the QB position. I do know this team looks very good with SB at QB. But, is our ceiling incredibly low with him? I’d argue it’s possible.

I think JT Daniels has to get shot at some point but it’s tough to do when there’s no break in the waves to allow that to happen.

Bennett is the best 5’10” QB in the US of A.

I would argue that the AU game was the most complete game of Kirby's tenure. I'd even argue that the ceiling went up. JMHO, from the eye ball test.

Bennett looked great given he hasn't been working with the first team until now....

An idealized version of whatever we were supposed to do with Fields, but actually make sense? I'll take it.

Just like with the Eason/Fromm situation in 2017, you ride the horse that takes you the furthest until they fall over. Eason was the guy that season until he got injured and then he was still the QB with the best physical toolset when he recovered but Fromm was the guy who led the team in the huddle and consistently and reliably got the ball to our playmakers. CKS wasn’t going to rock the boat when we were winning with him.

Likewise Daniels might have the better arm and in-game experience and Mathis the better arm and legs combo but Bennett is the one consistently and reliability getting the ball to our playmakers right now. CKS doesn’t want to rock the boat, nor should he.

Fromm didn’t give CKS much of a reason to go back to Eason in ‘17 but we have our biggest tests ahead of us still so we might yet have an opportunity to see what Daniels can do for us or if Mathis is improving, but until the Mailman stops delivering, those two need to stay ready and wait, because Bennett is doing what we need to win games, and that’s the only “ceiling” we need with our elite defense.

Possibly. But I remember those arse whippings that UF and UT took in 2017 were pretty solid games all around too.
