Practice Report 8/12/19: Charlton ‘Mr. Intensity’ Warren adds heat to drills

Tyson Campbell: Campbell was back at practice on Tuesday after suffering an injury in Saturday’s scrimmage action. No braces or limitations.
Reserves sidelined: Neither linebacker Nate McBride nor tight end Rylan Goede were seen dressed out.
David Marshall: Georgia defensive lineman David Marshall, coming off Lisfranc (foot) surgery, was helped off the field during warmups. Was not limping.
NFL scouts wowed: More than a handful of NFL scouts were in attendance at Georgia practice on Monday, and more than one was overhead talking about the “Great Wall.” [i]

Defense
Sophomore Tyson Campbell looked healthy as he led the corners in a press coverage drill. Campbell was a full participant in the drills during the eight-minute open period, but none of the drills required very much live contact.
Getting reps at corner behind Campbell and Eric Stokes at corner was redshirt freshman Divaad Wilson. Wilson received some extra instruction from defensive backs coach Charlton Warren who wasn’t pleased with his focus during the drill.
Notably absent from practice was inside linebacker Nate McBride. He also missed Saturday’s scrimmage with an injury. McBride saw action in all 14 games last year as a sophomore.
The outside linebackers worked on pass rush and footwork during the media viewing period. Helping defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Dan Lanning was former Bulldog Jarvis Jones. He could be heard urging the backers to “grab grass” in order to stay low and keep a good leveraged position when rushing the passer. Jones was drafted with the 17th overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Offense
Freshman tight end Ryland Goede did not participate in practice again on Monday. Smart said Goede is banged up but could return to the field as early as Wednesday.
After splitting up at the beginning of the media viewing period, receivers reconvened to do the normal pass catching drills with quarterbacks. Monday's practice saw a lot of missed catches.
Freshman George Pickens, who made an impressive one-handed catch during Saturday's scrimmage, dropped a short pass. Demetris Robertson also mishandled a sharp pass from Jake Fromm.
Half of the receivers worked on fly routes. Most of those plays ended with a ball on the ground due to an overthrown pass.

Starting to wonder if Nate is transferring

All this transferring of players. It's gotten out of hand. NCAA needs to clamp down on that shite. No player should be allowed to transfer this close to start of football season or during football season.

I don’t care if a guy transfers, just don’t grant them immediate eligibility this late in the process

He isn’t in the portal as of now, but honestly, transfers are the new norm.
In regards to Nate, I think an injury is more likely. He is a valuable special teamer, but will never be a significant contributor at linebacker.

Folks need to understand that the transfers are good for us and about 4 other schools in CFB. If a top flight kid knows going in that he can transfer if can't win the job in 2 years or so he's much more like to risk it and sign with the better roster.
Because of that a 5* like Cox, who will start at Florida in '21, can pound pavement and we still go 3 deep with top 50 players who beat him out on a highly competitive roster. AND we make room to recruit another stud to sharpen the tempered iron we already have. It's perfect.
This helps us widen the gap. I want them to keep it exactly how it is.

Exactly. Smart learned at Alabama how to process the weak and keep the team strong. We will not miss Cox in the first two games and a 5* frosh will be ready in backup by the ND game.
