I never seems to be able to maintain a healthy diet before I saw UGA grad Alton Brown's suggested diet on a Good Eats episode. Alton's diet is extremely simple to follow and it is nutritious.

There are 4 lists prioritizing culinary input.

List 1 - Foods that must be consumed daily.

FRUITS
WHOLE GRAINS
LEAFY GREENS
NUTS
CARROTS
GREEN TEA

List 2 - Foods that must be consumer three times weekly.

OILY FISH
YOGURT
BROCCOLI
SWEET POTATO
AVOCADO

List 3 - Foods that are only allowed 1 per week.

RED MEAT
PASTA
DESSERT
ALCOHOL

List 4 - Foods I never eat

FAST FOOD
SODA POP
PROCESSED MEALS
CANNED SOUPS
"DIET" ANYTHING

During football season I get fat due to alcohol and compulsive nervous eating on Saturdays. The rest of the year I pretty much follow Alton's advice to lose what I gained in the Fall and Winter.

No but you said 'extreme calorie cutting', which there is noting more extreme than fasting in regards to cutting calories. Fasting shows that your metabolism doesn't take a big hit like you are saying.

Your metabolism adapts quickly from a massive calorie cut. That is a fact. You’ll lose more quickly with moderate cuts.

As I said if you’re obese you can get away with it at first but as you continue to get leaner your metabolism will adapt and you won’t lose as quickly with high calorie deficits.

This is a defense mechanism your body uses because it’s afraid you’re going to starve. The body is a very intelligent machine.

Dude, I don't think anyone here is suggesting going on an 'massive calorie cut'. However, I've stated that fasting, which is the most extreme calorie cut, can increase your metabolism after a few days of fasting.

quote:

Resting metabolic rate (kJ/min) was significantly increased after 36 h of starvation (12 h 4.60 (SE 0.14), 36 h 4.88 (SE 0.13), P < 0.001),

Here goes another study that shows similar results. LINK

Again, no one is suggesting that one takes part in the prison camp diet fad. However extreme calorie cutting like fasting for 3-4 days, can in fact increase ones metabolism while doing a lot of other good things for your body.

I’m not talking prison camp diet. Anything over a 500 calorie deficit is going to cause a major slowdown of your metabolism.

Now if you’re only talking about fasting for short periods like less than a week then you should be fine. I’m talking about prolonged periods with a deficit of more than 500 calories per day. When most people are trying to lose weight they usually need a lot more time than a week. So discussing the very short term is pointless to me.

How about this, where is your sources for all of your claims? I tried providing some for mine, but I would love to see yours. So where are the studies that show a 500 calorie deficit a day will cause a 'major slowdown of your metabolism'? I'm not trying to be a dickhead, but I would love to see them.

Well for one in case you weren’t paying attention before I’ve been a bodybuilder for 15 years. I know how the body works because not only have I researched it I’ve lived it.

If you really need me to prove this besides the links I’ve already posted I’ll find you some more.

Timeout. Before this gets any uglier, let’s put you both on the undercard for Rib-Off 2 and settle this like gentlemen.

That’s right

Or maybe you could compete head to head with health shake recipes.

You've got uncompromising Winner instincts. Well done. We're going to need you for HMG6 too if it goes down

Basically you post method / result / etc pics and people talk a lot of shite. THen

-in the end, a ballot thread gets posted
-with different categories to vote on about originality, presentation, etc
-including the prestigious 'best in show' Champ category that RB won
-and after the GSB has spoken, then people get their feelings hurt and stuff
-and we go from there

Been doing it for about 2 months and, the results have been pretty strong. Just curious if anyone else has gotten on the train either for weight loss or just for maintaining their health and increasing longevity.

Yep. Been on that train for over three years now myself. Most of the time I'll do lazy keto where I'm not really tracking the macros, but I've also tinkered with One Meal A Day (OMAD) with macro tracking and even extended fasts.

It's been an eye opener. It's really remarkable how much better I feel and function as a whole with this way of eating as opposed to the standard American diet. All of the middle-aged aches and pains, the inflammation and swelling on my knees and ankles are all gone. It's a way of life for me now. Of course, I slip up every now and again, but I always come back because of how much better I feel when eating a LCHF diet. It always makes me think of this quote:

Yeah...it’s been really amazing to watch everything from cholesterol to cognitive function and everything in between improve since I started. I have found that my body will just flat out tell me Hell naw! If I try to eat something high carb or high sugar. I don’t even like Dr. Pepper and Reese’s anymore. My tastebuds were offended by them both. Just tasted like sweet poison.
