The straw game pays. I know a guy who heard about the dude who sells the augusta national all their gourmet pine straw and he's making millions.

It's no bed of roses though. He sent a load one time that wasn't shampooed and combed and it got turned around and sent back at the gate sight unseen, so he's pretty sure his phone is bugged.

I believe it. I'd like to see the long leafs that produce that straw. Bet he could have another million in timber.

In Columbia pinestraw goes for $3 - $4 bale. So obviously you could get $8 in suburban Atl.

Spreading is another $2 or so.....which is well worth it. That truly is a job that sucks.

As far as grass - I've heard good things about St Augustine. Just don't get centipede. It's a pain in the arse.

Long leaf pine straw sells for about $5 a bundle in Atlanta. Short leaf about $4. Wheat straw about the same.
As for St. Augustine grass, I have about a half acre back yard of St. Augustine in full sun and it is great. Doesn't grow tall but it sends out runners and chokes out the weeds. In the shade it doesn't grow well and it goes dormant in dry weather.

I emailed the environmental design school to see what they have in the founders garden. I suspect it is some kind of frankenstein zoysia. Ill report back.

But I haven't even moved into my house yet and won't be laying sod until May. I guess I could do some really impressive prep work and still win? Maybe some pansies around the mailbox? I'm going to lose this one so bad.

I have a question on this topic. I have a small side yard on one side of the house which is mostly in the shade--we're talking about 10 yards by 25 yards. It has a moderate slope and I really want to get some grass growing on it this Spring. Do I get some dirt hauled in and then level it up to plant it? Also, I didn't want the dirt to wash away so I'm guessing I may need a retaining wall or some kind of support for the sod which would be on the downhill side? It's pretty much just rocks with very little grass right now.

That perfectly describes both sides of my house.

ETA-

Can anyone recommend a good concoction for a spray-and-rinse for removing mildew from shaded vinyl siding?

Mine sits on a steep slope on top of a mountain but I've got a little flatness on the top where the house is located and this spot is on one side of the house before it trails off down the mountain. I could trim some trees and open it up to more sunlight but it is still going to be relatively shady most of the day.

You'll have to figure something out. Lawn Off is on. I've already got the theme music picked out and the hype video scripted in my head.

Litigator, thanks for enrolling.

Let's work on setting the rules now. Let's do the voting like how we did for Rib Off 1. Should we maybe add stages though like the new NASCAR format?
