I wish they had apartments like that when I went to UGA from 64-68.

None of us would have been able to afford the rents these places charge when we were at UGA.

I checked River Mill apartments about 5 years ago and the rent was extremely low.

I think I may have heard that those apartments have since been torn down.

Athens apartments have a hierarchy. The student apartments are the best. Then someone builds nicer ones that the students move into. Families take over the old student apartments. After the next move up, investors buy up the old apartments and turn them into section 8 housing.

You should see some of the older apartments on the east side, especially down Cedar Shoals Drive. Well, you shouldn't go there to see them but you get what I'm saying.

Rent when I graduated in '99 was $800 for a 2 bedroom townhome.

Same unit was going for under $1200 5 years ago.
I read the reviews and they were awful (mildew smells, roaches, systems issues).
I havent confirmed that it has been torn down, but I'm not shocked if what I heard is true.

I paid $210 a month for my half of the rent at River Mill in the early 90s.

In 1996, we had a 2 bedroom place on the corner of Harris and Dearing for $495. I still have reoccurring dreams about still living there as an adult.

Great, I loved it, campus and stadium right there and wasn't a bad walk Downtown.

Abilene Icehouse/Blind Pig across the street was a bonus, too.

There were nights when they wouldn't kick us out until sun up the next day.

Icehouse opened about the time I moved over to River Club. Probably should have stayed at River Mill...

On Sundays when we forgot to buy extra beer on Saturday (couldn't buy on Sunday in GA), we'd get a pitcher at Blind Pig and just walk it back to the apartment to play video games and whatnot. We'd always return the pitchers.

I also blame my colon irregularities of today on the amount of cheese fries I ate from Blind Pig while living in Rivermill. Not even real cheese, it would turn into concrete once it cooled down. You could pick the hole thing up, glued together, and eat it like a sandwich.

In my day there was one place where on Sundays everyone knew they could go to the back of it and leave some money on the steps then leave and come back 15 minutes later. When you came back your beers would be there on the back steps waiting for you.

That was one popular place on Sundays.

The Taco Stand on Millegde would sell 12 packs of PBR over the counter, for people to dine in, of course. But you just walk out with it.

As the old proverb goes, "Where there's a will, there's a way".

My buddies’ dad was career coast guard so we had a hook up at that Naval training place for Sunday beer IIRC.
