When a td is open, it needs to be hit more often than not, especially in our offense. That’s what a good passer is expected to do in any offense, and it has a major impact either way.
I agree in theory, but my point stands that we shouldn't rely on a couple of missed throws when the rest of our offense is relatively piss-poor throughout games. In the last few games, we've had many possessions and only a few really good drives. Our offense isn't based on an air raid, which means we rely on grinding the ball down the field. We haven't been doing that successfully and that has less to do with a few missed deep shots than what others are admitting here.

quote:

These opportunities are few and far between, but when he is consistently missing on them, it isn’t an outlier. Fromm is missing these throws on short, medium, and long throws. Very few, if any, of his misses have been on very low % passes. That’s not gonna be good enough to beat LSU, as we saw in 2018, and this LSU is much better.
The thing is that he's not really "missing" a lot. Balls are getting knocked away or caught prior to the first down marker. He has to check down a lot because receivers aren't getting separation. He's not outright missing much, which is why the focus to date has been on those deep throws (and the uncharacteristic one to Herrien).

quote:

When he misses, especially early, it enables to defense to maintain their “stuff the run” game plan, which contributes to the struggles of our run game. It probably doesn’t help his confidence passing either.
I agree with you on this point in principle, but I don't think missing early means much throughout the game. The game plan for almost all defenses is to stop our run game. That doesn't change because he misses on a deep throw early on. We need to keep moving the chains with our run game and pass game to soften up defenses. When we're one dimensional, it kills us, and deep throws aren't the only way to be successful throwing the ball.

the complaint has been that we haven't even been playing at a high level. That goes well beyond a couple of throws early in a game.

UGA is 11-1 and ranked #4. 1-2 more big plays per game, and UGA is 12-0 with an inside track to the playoffs.

The margin is that small. 1-2 big plays a game makes UGA far more likely to win a title. That’s the reason for the noise. It’s so close.

No, but that plan could change if he hits on a deep ball or two early on.

Good God.We threw NINE times on 1st down vs A&M! We also threw slants, screens, wheel routes, fly pattern etc.Point is,Foley put him in numerous situations to succeed and he didn't.Hell,I thought we were throwing way too much on 1st down because we just weren't successful. Run,run, pass was our pattern on about 30% of our drives.
Again, I'm not talking about just the A&M game. I'm talking about our strategy throughout the season. Of course we change things up and we don't exclusively run on first down. That's not my point. I want to see more of what we did against A&M but with better execution. For most of the season (and in fact, most of the past 3 seasons), Fromm has had to get most of his yards throwing on 3rd down, meaning we haven't been as successful on 1st and 2nd downs.

quote:

We're averaging 5.2 ypc.
That's a good average, but not what I'm getting at. A lot of our runs plays have either been for 2-3 yards or bigger pickups. The last three games, we've averaged nearly 5 yards a carry, but our median (better accounts for outliers) is only 3. We haven't been consistently getting good yards on the ground and have put us in a lot of 3rd and mediums and 3rd and longs which then stall our drives when we can't convert and/or we have penalties put us further from the 1st down marker.

It’s a ball control offense based on 1) a strong run game and 2) an accurate pass game.

You know what helps both a run game and a short pass game?

Hitting the open passes downfield, thus Making them pay for a focus on stopping the run.

Make those safeties and cbs back off, and Make those lbs worry about what’s behind them.

So hopefully you understand why so many are frustrated when everything works on a play, but the qb can’t make the throw.
But say nothing about the wrs and their inexperience? No, I don't understand that. Honestly...I believe the inexperience of our wrs have had a bigger impact. It's just more visible when it is the QB.
Some of the eraant throws, for example are because an inexperienced wr misread the coverage and ran the wrong route. But, yes..there have been times when Fromm has simply missed his throws. But that is one reaon those are considered low percentage throws. Because they are more difficult, We have become spoiled by the likes of Aaron Murray and Jake Fromm.

quote:

Fromm has missed 2 td passes to him this month.
I don't doubt it. But I have seen wrs give up on routes, run wrong routes, abnd simply drop passes they should have or could have caught. It's not always on the QB. I'm not saying Fromm hasn't been off. I am giving some explanations as to why he has been off.

Why? For what? On these specific plays I reference, they did what they needed to do and got open, but Fromm missed them. Their inexperience is irrelevant.

This whole conversation comes from a shitty arse post about what if Fields had stayed. Now it has turned into a defend Fromm and throw his arse under the buss debate.

How about we get back to the original OP. If Fields had stayed his arse would be riding pine and hopefully learning the offense so he can take over when the time comes ala DJ Shockley.

ALSO WHO GIVES A frick ABOUT JUSTIN SOMEONE HURT MY RACIAL FEELING FIELDS!!!! If you are the best than you should be able to beat out the man in front of you period if you can't suck it the frick up and be a team player. We don't need these shitty arse threads on here undermining a DGD who has never quit on the team. Justin is kicking butt on an air raid style offense with a insanely good receiving core and a top 5 RB in JK.

Week in and week out they beat on Stevie wonder, Ray Charles, Hellen Keller, and school of the blind. Congratulations you have played one competitive game all year get that stupid shite off our board. Jake Fromm is the fricking captain of this team and we ride and die with him and should throw our support behind him. It's okay to be critical of bad play or a few missed throws but by God I don't want to from the well Justin would have made those throws crowd (fake arse fan club). He quit he fricking quit he left us and his allegiance to UGA football along with some of you cocksuckers.

If he stayed, it would be because he won the starting job, and Fromm would have transferred out. He left because he knew he was an elite talent worthy of starting at an elite school, as he has proven up north. He made the only sensible decision to make in his circumstance, and Kirby probably regrets it more every week.

He left because he couldn't win the job. Chalk it up any witch bullshite way you want but he didn't win and therefore ran away. He may have generational talent but you gotta beat the man in front of you to show it off and he didn't. You aren't a paid professional coach so I think I'll take Cheney and Kirby's expertise over the suck off Justin crowd on here. He ran away and lied to play no if ands or butts. Is he doing great at OSU sure but that ain't UGA and the SEC baby!!!!

He was never given a fair chance on the football field to win the job, so he left as any reasonable qb would have done. Ohio st and all of our opponents thank Kirby for his short sighted and gutless decision.

If you think Fromm is better than Fields then you don’t watch football. The guy has 40+ touchdowns. Fromm has less than 20. And Wisconsin and Penn State have good defenses. Some of you people are so hard headed and refuse to admit the talent of Fields.

Indisputable imo.

The guy is playing great. The guy has real talent. He may win a Natty. But the above quoted is fact.

ETA: Kirby and staff recruited and landed Fields. They knew what they had. They should have done more to keep him. Big time programs do it. Kirby didn't. This time.

I don't like idiotic, hate the guy that transferred posts much.

Good or bad most of us would much rather discuss UGA. It's nice that this naturally evolved into a UGA centered discussion.

To be fair, we're 11-1 with the 1 loss coming due to 4 turnovers. Big plays (or the lack of them) didn't help or hurt us as much in that game as our turnovers did. It was a freak anomaly of a game with everything seeming to go wrong.

I get wanting or needing to have big plays, and we've had a lot of them both running and throwing the ball. It's my opinion that having consistency on offense and being able to drive the ball down the field is more important to our championship hopes than the big plays, though the big plays are helpful.

I'm sure if we were able to move the ball consistently and put points on the board with 10-15 yard tosses, people wouldn't be so upset at the handful of missed deep balls. Context matters, and not being able to move the ball only highlights the misses where in the past they wouldn't have been as much of a problem.

While possible, it's unlikely. Football is a game of momentum and while we might get a temporary let up on the run defense, if we can't execute on the short-to-medium throws then the defense won't take long to go back to stacking the box. We can't rely on 50 yard bombs; that's not what our offense is about. We're more of a dink-and-dunk offense that eats clock and rests our defense with a few big plays thrown in for good measure. It's "old man football". We just need to do better at executing that style of football.

Zero top college teams rely on this approach to move the ball and score points other than UGA.

I don’t like relying on just us to have outsmarted them all. When you’re alone in a strategic approach, you’re more likely wrong than right.

Listen never said Fields wasn't talented. He was raw at UGA and found that he could not beat out Jake Fromm you can say he wasn't given a fair shot but unless you were on the staff and watching his reps and everything like the coaches we paid for than your opinion on the the coaches didn't know what they had is shite.

I again agree with you in principle, but you make it seem like it's just the deep passes are what makes the defenses back off. They do, yes, but also a good short and intermediate passing game does the same thing if executed well. If they have to defend the pass (at any distance, really) then they have to move people outside, which opens up room for our RBs to run.

We've executed a similar plan for years, and especially the last few with Fromm. The difference between this season and the past few has been that we've consistently had help on the outside to keep defenses honest. Cager has done a great job of that this season, as well, which is why our offensive production is better when he's able to play. It's why I hope he can get rested and play a full game against LSU. We need him.
