First of all - He's got toughness. If your looking for a QB that can run the keeper and get some tough yards - this guy is tailor made for it.

He throws a beautiful deep ball. One of the best I've seen recently. Its a tight spiral that he can dime on kids.

His scrambling ability is good but not elite. He will make some plays with his legs but he's no Joe Burrow on his feet.

His 50/50 jump ball throws are excellent. He puts in a position where the reciever has the best shot at the ball primarily.

Things I didnt see - The backshoulder throw that Jake threw well.

I didn't see him throw across the field on any outs and deep out patterns. This may signify the offense didn't run alot of those patterns or it may signify zip on those particular throws may be lacking.

Didn't see alot of anticipation throws except on his deep ball. Not a lot of receivers breaking out of their cut and the ball being on the way already.

That's all I got - I think we got a good one. Clearly some things he's good at and some things he will probably need to work on when he gets here.

Good summary of his strengths and unknowns.

Good analysis...

Keep in mind, Russell Wilson as a Junior at NC State: 308/527 58.4% completion percentage. 3500 yards passing. 28TD’s 14INT. He turned out to be pretty good with better talent @ Wisconsin.

Newman gives UGA that extra # on the field. As it has been stated before, all it takes is 5-7 runs/scrambles to force the defense to account for it.

Floyd- Did you watch any of his condensed game film or just highlights? There is a condensed film from the NC State game this year that shows pretty much all of his throws. Kinda long but I will link it just in case you didn't watch it.

NC State vs. Wake Condensed

Also someone compared his stats vs same teams Clemson played this year, and he isn't really far off from Trevor. Don't credit me for this comparison, as it is a copy and paste from another place.

quote:

Wake and Clemson each played UNC, NCST, BC and Louisville this season.

Trevor was a combined 76-107 (71%) for 990 passing with 10 TDs and 2 ints. Newman was 84-138 (61%) for 995 passing with 9 TDs and 4 picks.

Rushing, Trevor ran 37 times for 193 yards & 2 TDs, and Newman ran 62 times for 223 yards & 4 TDs.

Trevor obviously won all 4 games, Newman was 3-1, and Wake scored 59 in the lone loss to Louisville.

Now, when you figure that Clemson had better talent all over the field than Wake, and any defense they saw, and considering Wake had inferior players, its evident that Newman is a top notch talent. What could Newman have done if he could throw to first rounders Higgins and Ross, while having the threat of first rounder Etienne out of the backfield, all while being protected by a dang good OL? Would have been dynamic...

Nice take. It will be interesting to see how well he adapts to our offense. I'm liking what I'm seeing in his highlights. At 6'4" 230 lbs. he's bigger and stronger than Fromm and seems to have more mobility and arm strength. The question is: will he be able to read SEC defenses and get us into a favorable play; Fromm as good at that most of the time.

You really need to watch at least the first 10 mins of this video by Brooks Austin.

Newman is easily more agile and quick than Burrow. WAY more lateral agility and RB level vision.

Outs, curls and back shoulder are timing routes. Him not throwing them doesn’t necessarily mean he can not throw them, but they are hard throws. Especially deep outs. You have to put them in a spot before the receiver breaks, so it's important both players have their timing right.

I watched mostly highlights on Youtube that I could find. No Condensed full game footage yet so I am sure he has more throws to look into. I will check it out.

Thank you

I agree, and that may have been part of the Wake offense to not use alot of these patterns. Will be interesting to see if that's in the playbook next year.

I agree he looks like a back when he has the ball but disagree with Burrow. Burrow is Tom Brady slippery with better speed. Dude just knows how to work the pocket to his advantage and will straight up destroy you with his foot speed. He's elite in that area.

I remember people talking about how underwhelming the Lawrence Cager transfer was. I hope Newman follows suit with even a bigger impact.

Yep, and he played in the ACC that everyone rails on the second you get a player from that conference. Studs can come from any conference and from any team.

And Eli wolf. Kirby isn’t gonna take a trash grad transfer. He knows what he is doing in roster mgmt.

A shame Cager wasn’t healthy all season.

I'm thinking that was communicable and Simmons and Matt Landers caught it from Cager.

Practically all they caught last year...

Seemed like Simmons finally got it in the last 3 quarters of the season. He was damn frustrating to watch before that.

Besides that massive drop vs LSU, am I right?

I think he means the last 3 quarters of the Sugar Bowl. That was his best game all season. He went out on a good note.

Hopefully Landers got a confidence boost from his TD catch. I think even he was shocked he caught it.

Surratt and Washington would be starters at Georgia this past season.... just saying. We are gona need guys for him to throw to. Obviously Pickens will be our main man but one of these freshman is going to have to step up.
