Bama's offense has a more explosive component than we've seen from the Dawg O, so far. Whether that's been a matter of keeping cards close to the vest leading up to this game or not having legit downfield threats like we have in the past - we'll have to see.

With Arian Smith, Lovett, Young and some other of the new guys, you'd think we'd be slinging it down the field on principle.

Bama “more explosive “?
They played Western Kentucky and USF at home. They looked like shite vs USF until USF started gambling on defense in the 4th quarter.

Wisconsin eats cheese.

My diarrhea is more explosive when I eat at the Mexican Sushi place on Buford Highway.

This is beck we are talking about. While he is superb at short and intermediate stuff, I seem to recall him ever only hitting one player in stride downfield. The rest were comebacks. I may be wrong, though.

I drifted partially out of a deep sleep around 4:30 this morning and imagined the Dawgs handing Bama a humiliating defeat by getting after Milroe play after play. Beck played well. I hope that hurricane Helene will let me see it in real time.

To my recollection, ESPNU analysis on XM says they've had over 20 plays of 20+ yards downfield. That meets the accepted definition of "explosive".

Now, have they played anyone? We honestly don't know.

I think we have more than what it takes to win, and I hope we do. I'd love to have the Bama bugaboo have been limited to the Saban years.

It is clear our strategy against good teams is to protect the ball on offense and let the defense flip the field. If we get in a situation where we need to open it up and take lower % plays, we have the tools. Not saying we 100% can do it at will, but saying stats in this facet are misleading based on our philosophy

I don't like to judge teams this early, but it doesn't look like Alabama has played anybody decent yet. USF has beaten two bad teams and lost to two good teams. Wisconsin has struggled offensively all season and lost their qb in the first series against Alabama. After the 3rd quarter they just threw up the white flag. On the plus side Georgia's more battle tested, having played two teams better than anyone Bama's faced. But, we do have battle scars from those tough games and Alabama appears to be very healthy.

Because of their early schedule, DeBoer has probably only shown bits and pieces of his overall offensive strategy. I'm sure our coaches studied his Washington offenses in the offseason, but his personnel was different there and Michael Penix wasn't much of a runner. He'll have new wrinkles drawn up for this weekend.

It seems to me he only likes (or is coached) to throw the long ball when it's wide open, and when it's wide open, he'd rather put some air under it to make it more catchable rather than risk overthrowing it.

Nah, he misses the deep ball all together. Wish he would put some air under them.

Beck doesn't throw as many deep passes as some, but last season his explosive pass play numbers were good relative to other SEC quarterbacks. He's very accurate on the midrange stuff to any part of the field and hits a lot of receivers in stride so they get more YAC.

Versus P5 teams (I ignore G5 and FCS because the variance of quality is high and coaches gameplan differently vs cupcakes) in 2023, Beck was 2nd in 20+ yard passing plays (45), 4th in 30+ yds (20), 4th in 40+ yds (11), 4th in 50+ yds (3). Other than Jayden Daniels, he was clustered really tightly with the other leaders (Dart, Milroe, Cook, Milton) in all of those catetories.

Unlike some of our opponents, SEC officials don't allow our OL to hold with impunity. I'm not sure how much Bobo trusts his offensive tackles to keep the qb clean on deep passes, so if Beck can get the ball out in 2.5 seconds and hit 20 yard crossing routes that end up being 30 or 40 yard gains, that may be the strategy that wins more games.

Mesh routes and deeper cross, outs, have the ability to still be big gainers and are higher percentage plays. Thats what Kirby wants based on the last 7 or so seasons.
