The questionable support post is plum nelly. No issues there. Weird pic in OP makes it look catty wampus. It isn't.
Staircase going in today, and laying the planks on the lower porch. These are among the finest Mexicans I've ever had the pleasure to allow on my property. I wish the maid had this much skill and work ethic.

Actually wasn't trying to be a dick, apparently it comes naturally.
I had a feeling it was camera angle - just very important.
I like the pergola personally; it will likely be even more effective if your wife is successful with the vines.

Put a 42 inch tv between the door and the window downstairs. Get a 2 seater outdoor couch and watch UGA football outside.

I have a 42 inch plasma spare. TV suggestions are welcome

Don't hate me but it's being decked backwards.
You start decking from the outside to inside - that way the last rip (narrow board) is against the house and doesn't stand out and fall off the edge as people step on it.
Eta...
The first decking board is put on the perimeter(outside). The decking is then run until you have the last rip. That last rip lands on your ledger joist and is hardly ever stepped on.
The way the Mexicans are doing it you're gonna have a narrow board landing on your rim joist that's not gonna hold up (or look right)

If you get really lucky with spacing or start checking it now to cheat you might get lucky.
But it's being done incorrectly.

Hate to sound like a dick buddy. Just grew up building and it's not being done right. Hopefully this info helps you.

Rip that shite up Rig. You’ve been bamboozled by Dreamers

It’s a guy in the neighborhood who owns the company, done many decks here, and has 5 star rating on home advisor with hundreds of reviews. I had others come quote, this guy seemed the least shady. He personally was here the first two days of construction. We’ll see how it turns out.

Just ask him where the "rip" is gonna end up.
Then, if you want tell him what I said (i.e. you thought the rip should end up against the wall).
See what he says.
Good luck.
If you don't like the way he tries to hide the rip withhold payment until he tears it up and fixes it.
Wish I could have done it for you, hope it works out. Honestly, it's a rookie mistake.

Here's the back yard I spend my time on.

You going to put one of those gutter systems under the upper deck to keep the water off the bottom? That’s what I’d do. Then screen the bottom in.

About as much grass in your backyard as there is in 'rigs!

We need to have a vote on whether to keep the Lowes plastic pergola thing from China.
I vote get rid of it.
Here's why:
-why would you put something on your new deck that restricts the useable space and makes it claustrophobic?
-also the pregula thing was designed for an open patio to create a space, not for an upper deck that is already defined and confined space.
-Form should always follow function.
-the pergola serves no function in this scenario
-it's like a kid putting a whale tail racing fin on the back of his Honda Civic
I vote get rid of it.

Pergula Vote Tally (so far):
Keep - 0
Get Rid - 1
Keep - 0
Get Rid - 1
