Georgia hopes added emphasis on red zone offense will help recent struggles

Georgia failed to score a touchdown three times in the red zone against Auburn. Not to mention, Georgia failed to score on multiple occasions against Kentucky and was stopped six times on the goal line against Florida.
While he might not see the field much on Saturdays, redshirt sophomore Prather Hudson has a vantage point of what Georgia works on in practice on a daily basis.
“I think more than anything we’ve just got to keep working on it and I think eventually it will start clicking every time,” Hudson said.
The problems near the goal line aren’t limited to the Bulldogs’ game against Auburn last Saturday. The issue has occurred since the Florida game, after which head coach Kirby Smart was clearly not satisfied with performance.
“It’s very frustrating and disappointing,” Smart said on Oct. 27 of getting stopped at the goal line. “It’s absolutely uncalled for and we are going to get that fixed.”
The situation hasn’t been as bad as it was in the game against the Gators, but issues are still there, and with Alabama looming in 2018 SEC Championship game, those issues need to be alleviated if the Bulldogs hope to win.
For senior tight end Jackson Harris, it’s not rocket science.
"I mean, we’re not re-inventing the wheel by any means,” Harris said. “We’re just going to go to work everyday.”

The Oline has been banged up for a while now.
- Andrew Thomas dealing with an ankle injury
- Solomon Kindley mild MCL sprain
- Lamont Gaillard Knee
- Ben Cleveland left fibula
- Cade Mays shoulder
That's a big reduction in strength. I'm hoping for no setbacks between now and the SECCG. With a healthy Oline I want to see them matchup man on man in the redzone against that Bama front.

A large part of the problem is stubborn play calling. Fake a run and pass on first down once in a while. Try the old Tebow jump pass with Fields. Show some imagination and mix it up.

Yep, lack of innovation is the issue. Our goal line offense isn't working. Run our spread offense with Fields in the shotgun, Swift in the backfield and 2 TE's blocking. Roll Fields out to the left with options to run, pitch out or pass. Do that 3 times and we will score touchdowns.

I actually went back and watched the 7th and Grantham series for the first time since the game. We were in the I formation the whole time minus one play with #45 Ford (Freshman) at FB.
Now a couple of plays were two tights with an H and one was an unbalanced line. We only got in the Spread once with the 3x1 Set on 3rd down when we tried to throw.
Honestly Ford at Fullback didn't impress me. Go back and watch, especially the first play when we run ISO. Should have picked up the backer in the hole......

I'm sure we will get back on track against our next two opponents but I'm worried about the goal line playcalling against Bama. Not sure why they haven't run zone read more frequently in goal to go situations, generally it's gotten us 3+ yards every time we run it no matter where we do it on the field.

We are not blocking the edge, this has cost us a couple TDs. Swift not following his lead blocker cost us one and Fields taking an enormous sack cost us one.
Block the edge, follow your lead blocking, and keep the ball near the goal. Simple fundamentals for frick sake. Getting Cleveland back will help too.

Go under center with 4WR to prevent the other team from stacking the box. If they don't respect the WRs being on the field, throw it to them

THis is what you do when you aren't man enough to punch it in for one yard.
This is the problem.
We shouldn't have to "scheme" around not being able to punch the ball in from one yard.

We just need to get a push on the Oline. We are not getting it. That’s the difference. Maybe work on our cadence to put the D on their heels a tad.

You've never seen Woerner and Nauta detach from the line?
Her point is to spread the field but get our best run blocking personnel out there. It wasn't hard to follow.

Not entirely. For instance one could chip block and become a receiver. Regardless, the point is that packing it up the middle out of the pro set hasn't been working so do something different for heaven's sake.
We have fast play makers. We just need to get them in space outside and they will get 1 yard with just a bit of lead blocking.
OU did this against us in the playoff game and Baker Mayfield even caught a TD pass on one of those plays. Boise State has been using this kind of offense for a long time. You focus multiple options at an outside point of attack making it extremely difficult for the defense to cover all the options. If the defenders come up to stop the run the QB flips it over their heads to the vacated receivers. If they cover all of the receivers then the QB runs it or pitches out to the trailing running back. We just need a little outside blocking to pick up a couple of yards. sheesh
We now have a dual-threat QB who is capable of executing this type of offense; we just need to develop him and the team around him to run it in the red-zone.
