Agreed. Wilkens for me may be the one that really breaks my spirits here. We can’t go hunt real talent unless it’s completely off the grid. We can’t keep our “pieces” we ever find from getting poached. And now we cannot even keep the legacies of some of the retired jerseys we have.

If white is a recruiter, NOW it is a fail in my mind because we sure aren’t going to coach people up.

This sucks. We will probably go bring people in from Emory or something and no disrespect meant, but that doesn’t inspire me to end the 2nd longest streak without a win in the ncaa tournament in the power 5

I would be fine overpaying him to an extent. Just sucks to see a legends son leave.

I would of course prefer to keep him. He's got a ton of talent and coudl blossom to be a great player. But I despise young players that havne't proven anything trying to hold their coach hostage and demand XYZ when they haven't earned it. He will make a nice salary because his talent commands it, but I am absolutely against "overpaying" a guy that is as unproven as he is. If we're going to overpay for someone it better be a piece that is a surefire starter and a bonafide player that will help us win games.

The crappiest part is that he is a legacy as you mentioned, and he's an exicting player. But if his name was Jake Smith would we be as concerned? Probably not if I had to guess.

wiht the state of our program the last 20 years that's understandable. We got Wilkinson, the PG from Vandy, Godfrey from Clemson, Catchings from BYU, etc. so it's not like we have zero ability to get good talent from other program.s

Such is life in the portal era. It happens to almost every school. And again, we're practically at like the football equivalent of an MSU or South Carolina in football so it's expected that our best will go on to bigger programs.

Sons of David Jacobs, Verron Haynes, and handful of others have sprurned Kirby to go play elsewhere all in the name of getting more money. I can't fault White if the rumors are true that the Wilkins basically demanded he be paid a ton and be guaranteed a starting spot.

Last year we lost Silas Demery, Asa, and Godfrey and brought in Wilkinson, Catchings, Smurf, and Ross and were a better overall team this year than last. I doubt many would have predicted that after our portal/NBA losses.

I don't like this either, but White has proven that he's fairly adequate at bringing in decent guys to fill out the roster.

I think you’re missing the point on Wilkens. Regardless of whether he’s fully proven himself on the court, there’s real value in keeping players like him because of the pedigree and recognition tied to his name.

Georgia isn’t exactly a top destination for 4–5 star recruits, even with NIL money, so retaining high-profile or “celebrity” players is crucial if we want to build relevance and attract stronger talent moving forward. That kind of visibility matters.

At the end of the day, this is an investment in the program’s future, pay the man. Oh well.

you must not have much experience with finances in the real world. This isn't a video game...if Wilkins was demanding 2 or 3 times what he's actaully worth based on his actual real life production, it is absolutely not worth keeping him jsut because. WE see it every signle offseason in football. We lose big time, 5 start talent every offseason not because we don't want them, but because they ask WAY too much and some other program like miami or texas will pay it anyway.

I can't believe that you are fine writing a blank check despite even qualifying it yourself: "whether or not he has proven himself on the court".

quote:

bc of his pedigree being associated with his dad

so on court production be damned, his dad played here so we should pay whatever? I assume if NIL existed the last few decades you'd feel the same way abotu Houston Kessler?

quote:

Georgia is not an attractive program for 4-5 star athletes, so holding onto “celebrity” players is pretty damned important to become relevant and to attract better players

this isn't even close to true. Most of these kids only care about money and playing time. Period. An 18 year old kid that was born in 2008 doesn't give a shite if the son of a guy that played here in the early 80s wants to go elsewhre.

quote:

Pay the damn man.

you don't even know what he's asking! If we had your way in fantasyland, we could guarantee jake a starting spot and blow our entire NIL budget and then have absolute scrubs that we plucked from NAIA rounding out the rest of the roster. We'd go winless in SEC play but hey, at least dominique would be happy right?!

On3 insiders reporting he wanted a big raise for next year- terms not specific.

It was stated elsewhere that if his name wasn’t Wilkins he’d be a Sun Belt level player. Not sure I’d go that far but I get the sentiment.

The portal in general sucks, but it has made college basketball so much worse. The attachment level to players is so much lower.

I mean, Michigan just spent over $10M on their starting 5 and they won a national championship. All 5 starters and 6th man coming from the portal….they were 8-24 two seasons ago

It’s all bullshite now. One year, some kid will want to come to UGA for basketball via portal and convince 4 others to come with him, just like what happened at Michigan this year…just a matter of when we pony up and when that player comes along…we have a top party school waiting for this scenario

Lfg

Should put some pressure on Mikey boy too. Your replacement is on staff. Better win a tourney game.

It's never ever a bad thing to have someone with deep ATL recruiting connections on staff. The fact that he's one of our best players ever, and also has 2 upper level offspring about to be college aged, certainly doesn't hurt either.

UGA is in contact with BYU PG Rob Wright. Not sure if we get him but sure would be nice.

Meh, that’s gone. Woulda been nice 4 years ago and 20 years prior….now, you can’t give Freshman enough time at most any school to keep them there. It’s all about the portal in basketball and all about getting the goods that actually make more in NIL than in NBA contracts.

Look at what Michigan did. Look at what a legacy (arguably the greatest of all time in UGA basketball) Freshman just did to us. It fricking sucks, but it’s now about getting that 1 or 2 kids early who then get other talent to come along for the single season ride

And honestly, not sure Mike White is now the guy to coach them to a NC if the goods come to us.
