He has a sidearm release but he is not using that to throw an angle route obviously because he has to layer the ball above the DL and in front of the LB.
Imagining posting confidently you don't have to layer an angle route.

By your definition, every fricking forward pass is a layered throw.
Just stop.
fricking stop.

I love and root for pretty much every guy on our roster but I have to agree with warmouth. I'm not anti phillips, and I hope he runs for 2K yards this year. But what we KNOW at this point, by what we've actually seen in GAMES, he really hastn' done anything at all. Nothing taht would indicate he's going to be some stud anyway.
Frazier is obvious, and Bowens really came on strong last year. I love his game and think he's criminally underrated by non UGA fans. Hell he's probably not even known at all by non UGA fans. Up until now the only thing anyone has ever said about phillips is that he's fast. Granted in the G-Day practice he looked better than we've seen him before and shows a lot more versatility to his game, but who knows how that will translate against big boy competition.

That is exactly what was said about James Cook his first 3 seasons.
The skillset and playcalling bode well for Phillips. He won't be an afterthought (blowouts only).

You conveniently leave out that:
1) James cook had 2 different OCs his first 2 years, neither of which had the slightest clue whatsoever how to use him
2) In 2020 when he did have a competent OC for the first time he was competing with Zamir, KMac, and Kendall milton for carries.
3) It wasn't until he had a full year of solid PT with a real OC (in 2020) that he finally flourished and excelled in 2021.
Bobo has been the OC as long as phillips has been here, he hasn't really shown anything in a real game, and it's not like his competition at RB has been some otherwordly collection of dudes.

I don't think he'll be a mopup duty-only guy. I just think he's at best our 3rd guy and may just play the role that guys like brian herrian or dajuan edwards played early in their careers where they come in for a spell but look good and kinda make you raise an eyebrow but you know they aren't contending for any more serious PT.

I think the takeaway is we have 3 solid running backs. P-Nut being #3 is a good thing. Our 3rd best RB is pretty good.

What metrics are you using to say he is pretty good? He hasn't done anything.
I would be more bullish on Bo Walker than peanut.
The dude is 5'9 175

It is crazy how the more you post, the more I can disagree.
James Cook was developed.
It wasn't the OCs fault. It wasn't the quality of players ahead of him.
James Cook worked his arse off and got better. Credit the strength staff. Credit the running backs coaches. Credit James Cook. Credit Monken for throwing him the ball against linebackers in coverage.
Lol

You know that they aren't contending for any more serious playing time? Daijun Edwards ran the football 164 times in 2023. That would lead the Dawgs in 4 out of the last 6 years.
Brian Herrien was our #2 back in 2019 with 103 rushes (behind Swift at 196).
Your comparisons aren't making a solid case for contending for a larger role on the team.

I absolutely agree that Phillips does not have the body of work that James Cook had when he was an underclassman. Cook cooked vandy and sisters of the poor.
But if you dont just look at stats and watch how he runs, you see Phillips fighting off tackles and falling forward. There is a "want" in a little man's body. You can also see him burst through holes in man and gap schemes.
Those are the players who jump out as upperclassmen.

I watch 99% of the games minus the end of blowouts so maybe I missed him tearing up charlotta and Austin pray but I don't remember seeing any of that. I don't remember a single memorable play he made.
I'm sure he will do great against the sisters of the poors again but I wont be buying any hype until he shows something against a real team in a real game.

I watch all of the plays.
If you like high school football, you should like watching the backups (yesterdays Friday night heros. Tomorrow's Saturday night heros).
I dont know how you can't get excited seeing an 18 year old making their first big play in front of 90000 fans.

James Cook was developed.
he was developed by the time he was on his 3rd OC (the only competent one) as an upperclassman. What have we seen from phillips that'd lead you to think he's on a similar trajectory?

well...yeah. Everything you said is true and nobody is really disputing any of that? I'm sure peanut is working his arse off and the strength staff has improved his physique too. Not sure what that has to do with him being a 3rd stringer at best as of now.

You kinda left out the really important part where I said "early in their careers". The stats you posted were from both guys' senior seasons lol. What I actually said if you'll reread, was that when both of those guys were EARLY IN THEIR CAREER and would come in in the 4th quarter in mopup duty, they had some runs that made you say "hey that guy's pretty good!" but at the same time you knew they weren't going to overtake the established starters ahead of them. And that's my current opinion on Phillips; he has potential, he'll probably have some runs this year that are terrific, but I don't think he'll overtake Frazier or Bowens.
Posted on 5/30/26 at 9:52 am to WG_Dawg
Has anyone here actually suggested that Peanut will overtake Frazier or Bowens? Sounds like a strawman argument.
Posted on 5/30/26 at 10:02 am to deeprig9
Well sonny said that peanuts growth and progression remind him of James Cook which is a pretty out there claim considering his career path up to today. It'd be like saying Gunter Stockton's trajectory reminds me of Johnny manziel, it's just kind of out of left field with nothing to really support it at all.
All me and others in this thread are saying is to simply pump the brakes on the guy until he's actually proving something on the field.

Im not trying to sell you anything.
It sounds like you never let your foot off the brakes. And that's fine.
Word in practice is that peanut makes plays. What I've seen (and the stats do not support) is him fighting through contact and falling forward. If 190 pounds can run harder than his size, then the potential is there to abuse linebackers that are bigger than him.

My bold prediction is that Bowens will be one of the top 3 running backs selected in the next NFL Draft. Bowens makes people miss and he's physical and his glide is elite. This is some elite glide right here…
