Local talent isn’t that big of a factor in basketball, at least in 2022, IMO. The best players have been traveling all over the country to play since they were in their early teens.
If the local talent was that big of an advantage, there’s no way UGA would have struggled so much for so long.
I think UGA can hire from most mid-majors, but the Andy Enfield talk was crazy to me.

while true, it's still not a disadvantage when they live an hour from campus

I disagree, we've struggled because we suck as a program. Miami and UCLA football are prime examples...those programs have gone on decades long droughts despite being in mega-hotbeds of talent. All the big time programs in america are winnig big with guys from south FL and southern cal, is it not logical that if those guys stayed at home that those programs would improve?
I can't even recall any coach we've had that was known as a dynamic, lights out recruiter. I thought crean was supposed to be one but he mainly just lived off of dwayne wade I guess. Fox was boring as sin and was better at taking 2 and 3 star guys and improving them opposed to getting 5* from the get go. Felton, blah. Even Harrick wasn't particularly an awesome recruiter, he was just an absolutley elite coach.
Wiht the talent we have in state we truly just need someone to keep SOME of them home. You could field a final 4 team at UGA simply with guys from this state that have gone to AU in the last 3 years.

Can’t believe they haven’t announced Crean’s firing yet. I assumed it would be done immediately at the end of the season. What’s the hold up.

We're barely over 12 hours from the time our season officially ended. Not really much of a concern, IMO. I'm sure Brooks has to have a face to face with Crean before it goes public and Idk if the team is even back in Athens yet?

I was being somewhat facetious but did assume it would’ve been announced this morning. Anxious for the process of hiring a new coach to get underway, if it hasn’t already.

I hear ya. I would think it's a 100% lock that brooks and crean have to meet first before anything "official" hits the internet and who knows if that's happened yet. I can't imagine why somethign wouldn't come out by the time we go to bed tonight

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chip Towers, Crean’s contract requires the university to give Crean seven days of written notice to be terminated “for any reason or no reason by the [Athletic] Association.” Towers added that as of noon Thursday, Crean has not received such notification.
Additionally, Towers reported Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks offered Crean the opportunity to resign Feb. 23 and receive his $3.2 million buyout, but Crean declined.
Interesting choice for Crean to refuse the opportunity to resign and still collect buyout. Sounds like the 7 day thing may or may not delay an "official official" announcement, though once notice is given, functionally, it's the same thing as official. I'd imagine you're not wrong... late tonight or early tomorrow some kind of announcement.

So I guess Brooks will give the 7 day notice in person whenever they meet, which I would sure hope would be today?

I was hearing Jonas Hayes and while that is probably a good hire with an up and coming assistant; I don't think it's the right move for us. The only advantage I've heard he would have is that he has some recruiting connections in Atlanta. I think we need to hire someone who has a lot of HC and program building experience. Probably someone like Harrick but without all the baggage and shadiness that came with him. Either way I don't think it's an easy situation for Brooks to lure a head coach into this dumpster fire.

Hayes would be a cowardly hire by Brooks.
We can and should do a whole lot better. Thank God Brooks is the AD now and not Howdy Doody.

Here's an interesting option from a Yahoo News Article that lists everyone we've discussed so far and a few more:
From the article:
Kenny Payne, New York Knicks assistant
The former Kentucky assistant for 10 years under John Calipari could land at Louisville, his alma mater. The Mississippi native is in his second season with the Knicks. Credited for helping the Wildcats land some of the nation’s top recruiting classes and developing Anthony Davis and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Colorado State head coach Niko Medved is among the candidates that Georgia is considering for the job.
Murray State coach Matt McMahon, former UGA assistant and player Jonas Hayes, Cleveland St coach Dennis Gates, and UT-Chattanooga head coach Lamont Paris have been connected to the job by multiple outlets, and they are among the candidates that sources confirmed this evening.
quote:
DawgSports has learned that Hayes has already interviewed for the job, confirming a report by Dawgs247 earlier this evening. Sources close to the situation confirmed that UGA has discussed trying to bring Hayes back to Athens if he isn’t chosen for the job. Hayes has deep ties to AAU and high-school programs across the state, and he would be a valuable to a new staff’s recruiting efforts in Atlanta.
quote:
Sources have also told DawgSports that McMahon and his wife Mary have done research on Athens in recent weeks, contacting local schools. The couple has two daughters and a son under age 12. McMahon’s Murray State team will be in the NCAA Tournament next week after going 30-2 and not dropping a game to a conference opponent in the regular season or conference tournament

Sounds like McMahon is the front-runner. I like it.

I like mcmahon for sure, my ONLY hangup is like I've said in another thread everyone wins at murray state. Literally their LAST EIGHT coaches have taken them to the tourney, with 6 of those 8 coahces taking them multiple times. He isn't necesarily doing anything that others before him havne't. However, when you look a bit deeper, it's a pretty solidly named list of coaches we're talking about. Steve Prohm, mick cronin, billy kennedy, mark gottfried. So it's a bit of a chicken and egg kinda thing for me.
Having said all that, hsi resume certainly passes muster. He has much better of a background than fox, IMO.

What you think about Kenny Payne whom Brick said above?
Posted on 3/11/22 at 8:37 am to SteelerBravesDawg
I honestly haven't given one second's thought to him until a few minutes ago in this thread. Just doing some brief reading on him it looks like he'd be able to recruit well (NCAA champion, NBA player, african american which may or may not matter to some guys idk) and he's worked for some good organizations. The big negative that jumps out at me is that he's never had to lead a program. He's essentially in the same mold as Jonas it looks like just with maybe more accomplishments in the assistant realm.
At this point in our program, I think getting a guy that's been a HC is a deal breaker to me.

Yeah I feel the same way.
It is a good sign that Murray State has actually been better since Ja Morant has left. That is on coaching.

2 names I keep hearing when talking to people about UGA opening if Brooks decides to go “experienced” HC route.. Houston’s Kelvin Sampson and Tulane’s Ron Hunter. Now.. there is no way Sampson leaves Houston, but Hunter would go and everyone in the Atlanta media would be happy
