Interesting....

From Mark Weiszer on Twitter
quote:

Asked ESPN’s Todd McShay about cornerback Deandre Baker, who he has placed at No. 19 overall in mock draft. Said if he falls it may be partly because of “some frustration from the coaching staff,” about not playing in bowl game “but being around and not being the best influence.”

He will fall because of our coaches telling scouts about their feelings?

Have a hard time believing that for sure. The coaches opinions are justified but have nothing to do with future value really. There isn't a comparable NFL equivalent other than not playing in the pro bowl but that doesn't matter to teams...

Interesting if true because they knew he wasn't playing and they were ok with him being around the team.

Sounds like a big deal out of nothing but the NFL would never do anything like try to devalue a player right before the draft

Interesting if true because

..... ESPN is supposed to be interviewing the local beat reporters about Georgia players... not the other way around.

What a fricking joke.

Someone must really want Baker in the late part of the first round.

This is from that same article....

I am selfishly hoping this is the Chiefs trying to manufacture a reason for him to be on the board at 29 but he is way to good to last that long

I love that website around draft time because they seem to be very plugged in. I have read that multiple times on that site and they have Baker falling out of the first round altogether now

Did Baker run at the Combine or at pro day? I don’t remember seeing his time.

This is bullshite, no way someone as polished in recruiting as this UGA staff allows any negativity over a player's NFL choices.

It's conjecture, made up on presumption, Fake News...

Walterfootball is trash. I feel like they rank the majority of their players based off of their recruiting rankings. I remember they had Isaac Nauta as a top 10 pick this time last year.

I don't think Walter football is trash.

Like every analyst, they base their ratings off of what they know at the time.
Speed kills at the next level. No one had a clue how slow Nauta was going to run back in February 2018.

Even based off of his freshman and sophomore year I don’t believe he was anywhere remotely close to being a 1st round pick let alone top 10. But hey, while they’re at it, they can go ahead and project Julian Rochester to be the number one overall pick next year.

coaches would never down talk their player. the higher he gets drafted the better it is for future recruiting.

Nauta had drops his freshman year.
I think the consensus when given the chance his sophomore and junior seasons, he did very well. Even Chaney looked back and said that our efficiency when targeting Nauta is among the best on the team. Chaney admitted that he should have been given more chances.

I don't mind agreeing to disagree on Nauta. I never would have placed him as All Conference. But I did see him as someone who could do better in the NFL than in college (until the 40 time posted)

Chigbu was the one with drops, nauta had reasonably sure hands with Eason.

Georgia’s Isaac Nauta could go from freshman standout to sophomore star

April 07, 2017

By Seth Emerson, DawgNation

...

The right things to say, obviously. Nauta also said the right things about improving this year, because for all his success last year (29 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns) there were definitely areas to firm up. A few drops. Help in run blocking.

“I just need to finish blocks better. That’s just something I felt like I needed to do,” Nauta said. “Catch everything that’s thrown my way. I had no excuses for dropping passes. And just being a good leader, for one. I just feel I need to start talking more, and get more involved in that area. And just being a good teammate.”

To your point... Eason did put a ton of pepper on a lot of his throws. Nauta had a lot of drops. But he may not have been the worst offender (Eason's bullets being the primary offender).

I just read the same article from chip towers.

I think this may be what Kirby wants. The media might be parroting a story fed to them.

What is the net result? Local players getting the idea that they better be a top 5-10 pick before being choosy about their playing time.

The reality is that the NFL doesn't care. Players are going to be drafted on what they can do for their NFL team. If that potential is equal to another player, then these may be tie-breakers. But lessor players aren't jumping better players in the draft.
