They actually made the tournament last year and are favored to win their conference. Still, no excuse to ever lose a game 1-0 unless it is a Friday night against an SEC ace. Batters shite their collective pants tonight, no other way around it

4-0 Dawgs in the 6th after we walk in a run
Bases loaded with nobody out, looks like we may blow this thing open

6-0 Dawgs in the 7th
KSU has committed 4 errors and walked in 2 runs though so hardly a result of us hitting well

Dawgs win it 11-1
7-1 on the year with a 3-4 Ga Southern squad waiting in Statesboro that is a few runs shy of winning series over Auburn and WVU

Schunk is a serious offensive weapon. Not sold on the rest of the team's offense. Yet.
But Schunk is the truth.

Wilcox is getting the start on Sunday this weekend, Proctor supposedly has a tired arm. We'll go Hancock/Locey/Wilcox.
Really excited to see what he can do. A sunday start on the road a few weeks into his career could be dicey, but we might as well see what he's got.

I still hate that we play a 3 game series at Southern every other year. It's basically their CWS and we don't really have much of anything to gain from it.

I don't particularly mind. Granted they hate us almost on a tech-level so it clearly means more to them but I feel like we learn more about our team in those series compared to like a Umass-Lowell type of series.

Oh I'm all for playing schools early in the year that aren't located in the northeast and that have an enrollment of 1,500 students. Just wish if we were gonna play an away series against a decent opponent it would be against an ACC school or the like rather than a team with a little brother complex that has us circled on their schedule all year.

Thats not Striklin though. I know under Perno, we would always have a pretty big early season weekend opponent. Florida State seemed to be the big one most years, we also played Arizona, Baylor, even went to the Jackie Robinson Classic in LA.
It seems Striklin likes to play the rent a win teams at the beginning of the season and just use the strength of the SEC schedule and the midweek games against Tech and Clemson to pad the strength of schedule.
Tennessee-Indiana, South Carolina-Clemson, Vandy-MLB4 Tournament in AZ and Pepperdine, Kentucky-Texas tech, Florida-Long Beach and Miami, LSU- Texas and Cal, Mississippi State-Frisco Classic, Arkansas-USC, Texas A&M-Shriners Classic, Auburn-UCF, Ole Miss-Tulane and Long Beach.
As you can see we are one of about three SEC teams that dont play any big names before SEC play starts.

It’s not a bad strategy honestly. Southern gives a hostile environement and they’re not a total scrub program; usually competitive in their conference and their players are often friends if not former travel ballcknlrtitiors of our players.
Given how competitive the SEC has gotten top to bottom, there’s just not much need to play a Zona or FSU like we used to early in the year to boost RPI. Plus we routinely play Clemson 2x and Tech 3x a year. Better to focus on amassing wins early and let the conference slate carry our RPI

As for Wilcox, Stricklin said on radio yesterday that his problem early on was he was overthrowing which while touching 98 was causing the ball to rise in the zone as a result of his arm placenta drifting to the side. Against KSU, he toned it down to where he was still hitting 94-95 but because his arm placement wasn’t drifting and he was throwing over the top of the ball, he was able to get that sinking motion in his fastball that is so devastating.
Hope this means they feel he has it worked out; our rotation can be absolute hell if Wilcox is pitching in it serviceably
