Thought it was interesting that even with limited recruiting coverage, he came in as the 19th rated RB nationally in the 2016 class... His skillset and video screams a higher rating than he ended up with, which is not surprising, but even with the existing rating, picking up a RB inside the top 20 at his position this late is a hell of a grab. I hope he keeps that chip/determination once he gets on campus because he looks like he really could excel at the next level with solid coaching. The natural ability is amazing, changing some of the little things could just accelerate his growth tremendously.

Remembers when we lost a RB to USC and picked up Moreno. Then got 5* KM and some guy named Gurley. Let's hope for some of that magic.

Hehe... I'm kind of of the same mind as Jeff Sentell from Dawgnation's podcast in that he's probably more likely to be a Musa Smith type back than a Moreno, but I'll gladly take another Musa (avg. 5.1 ypc for 1300+ yards and 8 TDs in final season at UGA) this late in the cycle given the lack of depth at the position. Might not have the breakaway speed to just outright burn past guys, but does have the agility and power to evade and/or break tackles, so could easily see him working his way onto the field for some carries.
Musa's numbers as a junior pre-draft:
Herrien's HS Senior numbers:
Uncertain if that was hand timed for Herrien, but would be my guess.

Don't think so. Think his name was Stephen Johnson. The kid who missed several games when he dropped about 400lbs on his neck.

It's all relative. Most kids coming out of high school have slightly "inflated" 40 times, usually hand timed. I'm not saying that he couldn't have run a 4.45, but his film looks closer to a 4.5x (nothing to sneeze at... Derrick Henry ran a 4.54 at combine or pro day I believe and Eddie Lacy was a 4.57).
Personally, don't believe that 40 time is terribly indicative of playing ability, but does give some indication to what they can do were they to find a play that breaks down and get through the initial hole.

40 is a good mix of sped an acceleration as a measure. A good RB gets up to full speed a lot quicker than an average one. That's what the 40 doesn't always tell.

Most big time prospects have been vented at college camps before their Sr year so most are pretty close to spot on.
"but his film looks closer to a 4.5x"
How in the world can you make that determination?

Even if this statement was accurate, Herrien is far from a "big time prospect" given the limited recruiting coverage (largely due to academic concerns). He also did not attend a lot of camps either.

I'm making a personal assessment of speed relative to other top prospects film... obviously it's subjective, but he doesn't look visibly faster than someone like Derrick Henry did out of HS. I suppose I should have made the sentence longer and said something to the effect of:
quote:
His film looks as though he has comparable on field speed as players that have clocked in at 4.5x.
But I felt like that was somewhat implied...

You mean you can't see the difference in 4.45 and 4.5 speed just by looking at a video. Maybe you need glasses!

4.5x - x being a variable... again, suppose I should have said "mid 4.5's"... everyones a fricking critic. Yes, there is typically a pretty noticeable difference in someone running roughly a tenth of a second different, particularly on film against other players for relative comparison.
