I was basing that original post on the widely accepted idea that donnan wasn't good.
Donnan had not even been mentioned.

Do you agree with donnan not being good?
I really don't think one way or the other about Donnan. I haven't thought about Donnan since he was fired.

That answer will tell us if richt 06-15 or 11-15 was good or not.
Why don't we pick Richt's best years instead of his worst years? that's what i don't get. You want to pick Richt's worst years as a coach to make a point that Donnan was as good as Riccht? Sorry. You have to use both coaches whole body of work.
Richt was hired after he was fired from Georgia. Donnan was not. That tells you all you need to know about what the coaching community thinks about both coaches.

You always want to cherry pick just some games over whatever time period of discussion.
Isn't that exactly what you did when you picked Richt's worst stretch of coaching to compare to Donnan?

The 15th in the country was a season ending ranking estimate. Where are we finishing when we go 10-4? I threw that out there as a guestimate.
You seem pretty high strung. Relax. It is just a dialogue.
And there were several years where our top 10 -12 recruising rankings put is #2 in the east and #4 or 5 in conference.

Auburn (our rival), LSU, and Bama were very consistent in recruiting.
Actually, Auburn rarely finishes above us in recruiting.

We can call Richt a good recruiter. Top 10-12 recruiting classes don't sound as sexy when they are #5 in the SEC.
It's still good recruiting. Recruiting rankings (Except for fans) are not broken down by conference. they are based nationally. And we consistently finished Top 10 in the nation out of 130 schools. That is good recruiting. Add to that, that we consistently go against Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Miami, Clemson and Tennessee for recruits, and it gets even more impressive. I mean, really. Who does USCw have to realistically go against to get a Top 10 class? Ohio State goes against Michigan and MAYBE Penn State. We go against more high powered programs than anybody else.

The statement was that Richt was not a good recruiter. He was at LEAST above average in the SEC, and Nationally he was an excellent recruiter. Top 10, usually, with an occasional Top 5 class.
I don't mind when people criticize Richt...but I do tend to bow up when people criticize him without merit. To say he was not a good coach or that he was not a good recruiter is wrong.

In 2011, we were not a good team. We lost to every good team on out schedule. We won the East. We won 10 games. But if you put another good team on our schedule... we would have lost. We were not outstandingly coached.
In fairness to the 2011 team...we lost to the #5 team in the country (Boise, and the #12 team South Carolina (By 3 points) and then we beat a #20 Auburn team and a #23 GT team knocking them out of the rankings, so I think they were a better team than many give them credit for.

Ummm. No. We beat a 5 loss GT and a 5 loss Auburn. That does not make us better than one on this thread was giving us credit for (having the East and a 10 win season as the mark of great coaching).

I agree with your post.
Great National recruiter is a stretch. But we are only dealing with semantics there.
He did a lot very well. He did a few things terribly (roster management which does take into account recruiting to an extent. No excuse for some of the numbers at DB or OL in some classes.)
But I think you and I are on the same page with your assessment of Richts career at UGA

No, his worst 5 yr stretch was 06-10, but I included 11-15 instead of limiting it to the worst stretch. I also didn't choose to ignore certain games over the years like he did. I think a problem here is that rd still doesn't know what cherry picking is.

Maybe. but Top 10 out of 130? That's pretty darn good. I think we have gotten numb to what a word means.
If we finished 10th in recruiting (And we typically finished around 7th or so) we would be in the top 7% of schools in recruiting. We would have done better than 93% of the other schools. That's not excellent? I said excellent....nobody said great. I mean, MOST years only 6 out of 130 teams recruited better.

UGA will generally recruit better than 110 of those 130 teams no matter what.

Because there is no disagreement over 2002-05. He was undoubtedly a championship coach during this time period. The program became elevated, but some want to ignore it coming back down to earth.

Why limit it at all? There is no coach ever, that when their career is over, people throw their best years out the window when saying how good of a coach he was. I guess Saban is only a decent coach if we throw his Alabama years out and just look at his Michigan State years.

Since we fired him despite finishing ranked 4 years in a row and with the 12th best winning % in the nation. Uga decided that's not good enough.

Nobody is saying it didn't come back down to earth. However, you seem to be ignoring that in the last 5 years it was doing better. Not where anybody wanted it to be, of course. The last 5 years we won the East twice and came an eyelash from winning the National Championship. That is good. Had we won in 2012, this conversation wouldn't even be occurring.

Where does Godwin end up on the depth chart? Will all 5 of his stars fit on the bench?

I honestly don't know what the answer to this question is...but Donnan was here for 5 years. Where would Richt have landed in his last 5 years he was here, as far as winning percentage and rankings?
And, I have to agree with RD, that Donnan got fired more for his record against our rivals than anything else. And lets not leave out that his trajectory was downward. We were ranked his last 4 years:
1997-10
1998-14
1999-16
2000-20
I have to admit that I am a bit surprised that we had a 10-2 record in 1997 and was only ranked 10th. Seems low, to me.
His records were also getting worse while losing to our rivals. It didn't help that we were having off field problems cropping up with players. In fairness, Richt had his share of off field problems with players, too.

Because the comparison is a period of time, and not a coaching career.
