Coach P's (LHB) analysis of Quincy Mauger:
quote:
Quincy Mauger
6’0’’, 195
Positives
1. Great instincts—can find the ball quickly in the air and on the ground. He’s a legitimate playmaker—5 picks, lots of PD’s, and 100 tackles last year.
2. Intelligent and disciplined. He plays under control, maintains his coverage responsibilities, and will not have to be “de-Blued”(UGA slang term for tendency to bite on play action—originally coined by King Jamez, I believe)
3. Good athleticism and range—quick feet, fairly fluid and agile, good speed and burst. Great backpedal for a HS safety.
4. Surprisingly physical and thumping tackler.
5. Good ball skills/hands in coverage.
6. Good football “skills” does the little things right, can play man coverage in the slot, etc.
Negatives
1. Size wise, he’s more of a CB in our scheme. This isn’t an issue in HS, but against the TE’s, RB’s, and bigger SEC Wr’s, can he hold up and compete? To me, that’s an open question.
2. Given his lack of size, isn’t an incredibly dynamic athlete. Is he athletic enough and instinctive enough to be a viable player despite small stature? I could certainly see it happening, no doubt. But I remember the SEC simply being too physical for Jakar Hamilton to handle, and he was bigger than Mauger. Conversely, Mauger is at least as athletic as Tra Battle, and much bigger.
Overall---I don’t really have criticisms of Mauger the football player. I could nitpick, but he’s a polished playmaker who just gets it done, over and over again.
I have questions about Mauger the physical specimen. His best tools are mental/instinctual….although that’s enough, certainly, if you’re good enough there, particularly at safety. His athleticism is good, but not necessarily great. His size is questionable. Sounds like Grantham was impressed enough with his athleticism in drills to feel that the total package of instincts and athleticism make up for the lack of size.

Coach P on Josh McNeil:
quote:
Josh McNeil
6’5’, 240
Positives
1. Excellent overall athleticism-has top end speed, acceleration, and quick feet.
2. Great hands and ball skills. Extremely natural catching with his hands.
3. Balanced and fluid
4. Great length and size potential
5. Basketball background should help him in route running
6. Lots of untapped talent—only playing for one year.
7. Surprisingly physical and good RAC ability. Can break tackles and make guys miss.
Negatives
1. Attitude—needs a little more humility about the game. Amazing physical talent, but he’s not the first to come along with that, and we’ve seen first hand how a questionable attitude can torpedo even the brightest career.
2. Raw and unpolished---only playing for one year. Inconsistent route runner.
3 . How good of a blocker is he? He looks willing, and he will be big enough, but unproven for now.
Overall-- McNeil can be as good as he IS WILLING to be.
It’s rare to find a player that has ideal size, ideal athleticism, and ideal hands and ball skills.
But he’s going to have to work for it, and dedicate himself to the game. Potentially the best combination of size, athleticism, and hands at TE at UGA since…I’m not sure.
He’s much longer and overall bigger framed than Orson Charles. He’s got better hands than Milner and Watson. He’s bigger than McMichael, and has similar athleticism and hands.

On Raekwon McMillan:
quote:
Raekwon McMillan
6’3’, 235
Positives
1. Massive and powerful—the biggest sophomore linebacker in the country, perhaps? Absolutely looks the part.
2. Very good quickness/burst moving forward. Great athlete for his size.
3. Very strong, can hold up well against olinemen
4. Instinctive and aggressive, particularly against the run, timing the snap and finding the ball quickly in the backfield.
5. Secure tackler who hits with authority and accelerates to the ball.
6. Looked natural playing on the LOS at DE/DT.
7. A beast against the inside run, and has the speed to get outside as well.
Negatives
1. Not quite as good as Reuben Foster. Not as fast, or as incredibly instinctive.
2. A little bit stiff.
Overall: There’s not much to dislike. His biggest negatives are only in comparison to the best HS middle lbr to come out in years. I based this eval off freshman/sophomore film, so there’s still tons of potential improvement in his game that might come.
Right now, I think he’s on a career track to be a Donta Hightower/Antoine Mclain(sorry for Bama reference, but I don’t think UGA’s had this kind of linebacker in a long time) kind of huge, athletic enforcer in the middle of the defense, with the burst, instincts, size, and athleticism to be effective against the run, in coverage, and rushing the passer.

yeah that's what he meant. Antoine is a LB for the Ravens.

There's a Dawgnight thread up on LHB, full of tons of info and the evals I posted above (so you don't have to wade through the mass amounts of comments for basic info)

Heard Matthews is camping tonight (as in participating at DN) and may or may not make it to Auburn tomorrow.
If you ask me, the Ogletrees (Newnan boys) and our other recruits need to make sure Tray spends the night in Athens...

Is the Trey Johnson he is expecting a possible commit from tonight AU's trey Johnson? What is the scoop on that?

Trey johnson is going to be there tonight which was really surprising. There is some smoke to the idea that he flips from Auburn, though I'm not too confident myself. Maybe RF going to Auburn yesterday pushes him to look around

Crowder has left. Supposedly met with the coaches before leaving though it hasn't been revealed if anything of major importance was said (by which I mean a commit)

Several of those guys are going from DN to AU this weekend. Should be interesting to see what comes out next week.

People talk about Mauger being a package deal kid, but I like him as a safety prospect on his own...not a Bell or LJ Moore, but a kid that has good talent and will contribute to our D in a couple of years.

See Coach P's Eval of Mauger on the last page. Kid is hardly a Harrow kind of guy. I'd expect him to get some meaningful reps after a year or two in the weight program

RF and Johnson will play different position at Auburn...I won't be upset if he flips but I don't think yesterday will have any bearing.

Nick Glass, Shaq Wiggins, and Tray are supposed to, but Tray and Glass are question marks to go to Auburn right now. Just depends on if they want to go over or if they want to hang out in Athens for the weekend
