Monger’s is probably my favorite restaurant in austin. Justine’s outside could be nice if you catch some nice weather that weekend. NeWorlDeli is underrated for something light.

Thanks again to all in this thread for the great suggestions. I will definitely keep all this in mind.

Reason for bumping is that I know where our crew will be parking on gameday and wanted some input on that area. It's in the vicinity of San Jacinto Blvd and Duval Street, somewhat kinda near the DTD house looking at google maps. After the game is over we have to go north so I'm guessing we're just kinda screwed as far as convenience goes since I've been told repeatedly to avoid I35. Will some of the smaller roads liek Lamar Blvd or Burnet Rd be opened afterwards?

I'd probably go San Jac to Speedway, over to 38th then head towards Mopac (Hwy 1). Honestly not sure how bad that will be heading North but it's gotta be better than 35.

That looks like it'd work. I'm guesing 38th will basically be a parking lot but it looks like that'll be our best option.

Friday:

My personal recommendation is Loro - South Lamar. It is the mashup between Aaron Franklin (brisket king of Austin) and Tyson Cole (molecular gastronomy king of Austin).

Saturday Campus:
Campus is massive but obviously the Tower, Union, & Drag are probably the things to see even though the Drag is nowhere near as vibrant as it was when I went to school.

Tailgate:
I highly recommend the Surly Horns tailgate here is the location pin

Throw in $20 to the tip jar and you will get access beers & brisket and they have a bunch of TVs tuned in to all the big games. Opposing fans are always welcome.

Parking is a giant PITA and so I would park as close as you can and hike in and if it's not walking distance then take Uber/Lyft to the Snarf's at 2901 Medical Arts St, 78705 and walk from there.

awesome thank you!!! We are definitely looking for some tailgates to hang out and this looks great, and only about a half mile from our parking spot

Looks like they are going all out for the Georgia game. Asking for $40 donation this round guess y'all are 2x as popular to MSU.

oh dang. Your previous post made it sould like you could stroll up and throw them some money but the link looks more "official"...to your recollection are you able to just walk up or do you need to pre-register?

They always have a donation bucket on the table in the tent the registration link is for those who feel the need to "buy tickets early"

I was putting the link in to indicate they moved it up from just brisket & beer to also including all sorts of liquor for the GA game.

Big Bros suggestions above are a pretty good guide, especially his advice on how to avoid I-35 while seeing some real Texas along the way.

For BBQ it looks like terry black and franklins are the two most highly recommended. For terry black I know it's a tiny hole in the wall with a line, but if we got there before opening do you think we'd have a relatively small wait on Friday? I woulnd't even consider going on Saturday but hopefully a weekday may ease the line a tad. How early would we need ot get in line? If it's probably going to be totally not worth it looks like Franklins would be just fine like someone else mentioned earlier.

ETA: It looks like I may have that info above backwards. Not sure which is the one that's tiny with a mega wait and whih is the one that's "normal" with no seating issues.

I plan to eat a ton of bbq in Austin and mexican/texmex in San Antonio. For SA is El mercado the cream of the crop? Or is pretty much any texmex we get going to all be great?

Yeah, it's much easier to get into Terry Black's. There may be a line, but it moves fairly quickly and usually isn't insanely long like Franklin's.

Edit- as for SA TexMex, simply avoid the places on the Riverwalk. There's one that isn't too bad (don't recall the name) but you can find better elsewhere in San Antonio. Just take advice from the locals, they know where the good stuff is.

oh ok thanks. If we wnatd to go crazy and try franklins anyway, how early would we need to get in line? I wouldn't consider going after they've already opened since that seems like a lost cause, but if we can get in line before they open and only have to wait a little bit we might do that.

Ah ok. Our hotel is alon the Riverwalk. SA seems pretty compact so we were hoping to just park at the hotel and then walk everywhere, I think the alamo is less than a mile from where we are which is the only big "MUST-DO" thing there .I may jsut ask the hotel folks about the food.

Also forgive me as an outsider here, but what si the difference in tex-mex and just mexican?

The line for Franklins starts insanely early, some people actually camp out overnight, and with everything going on in ATX this weekend I'm sure there will be some wealthy people paying randoms to wait in line for them and then call them when it gets moving.

If you aren't a TexMex connoisseur the restaurants on the Riverwalk will probably seem pretty good to you, and honestly they arent as bad as some make them out to be. As for TexMex vs Mexican I'll just say TexMex is a style of Mexican cuisine that is more tailored to anglo tastes (more beef, cheese and usually nothing more potent than jalapeno) while "Mexican" food varies quite a lot depending on which regional style the restaurant does. If it's southern Mexican/gulf it will be heavy on seafood, Northeast Mexican closer to TexMex but still different...and then everything between. All of the styles are worth trying in my opinion, but since SA is the birthplace of TexMex, that's what they do best. It won't look pretty on your plate, but you won't care about that once the eating starts, trust me on that.

can you give me a basic rundown on how to structure a visit? We'll probably try to do most of our sight seeing tourist shite on Friday so that it's hopefully not TOO croweded. Do we jsut find a parking garage nearby then walk around?

Also the UT Tower, is that something that you can visit and do stuff in/around?

I'd save this for gameday. I don't think you can go up in the tower anymore.. so it's really just.. there it is..

it's just a building/clock during the day..

When Texas wins.. the top turns orange..

When Texas wins a Conference Championship in any sport.. the whole tower turns orange..

When Texas wins a NC (in any sport)..

There are a lot of different options for Friday. The weather cools off this weekend, but it appears to be cloudy. It should be nice either way.

Just find someplace to park wherever you decide to go..

During the day..
1) Capitol
2) Texas Co-Op - if you want to look at gear or get some AC, also has free parking
3) A good barbecue place - lots to choose from

Around Sunset..
1) Mount Bonnell - small stairs to some awesome views
2) The Oasis - restaurant with some awesome views

There are a million different options.. Austin is a lot bigger than Athens (unfortunately).. It really just depends on what you want to do..

Are you going with kids and are you an older person?

I can give you some solid recommendations if I know more about what you are into and looking for.

Definitely catch the bats at sunset on the South Congress Bridge, get some pizza at Home Slice, go catch a live show at The Continental Club or stroll up go to The Elephant Room.

Grab some absinthe at Peche or go to a live show at The Comedy Mothership.

The Whitehorse is a fun time. Most people will be at the track during the day, so I don't think you'll have to worry about crowds as much until late in the evening when everyone goes out for the night.

Post-game will be nuts absolutely everywhere with the game letting out and everyone going out after a day on the track.

I lived in Austin for 8 years and worked in hospitality industry while in school finishing my bachelors degree, so I have a lot of recommendations for stuff like that.
