Let's play the what-if game and project 2003 with Slocum, 2008 with Fran, and 2012 with Sherman. 1989 with Jackie is not applicable as he was forced out by outside forces.
In 2003, 4-8 was going to happen regardless of the head coach. We had 1 senior linebacker (Jared Morris) and 3 total scholarship LBs as well as a whole host of flaws. We had just lost 4 players to the top 2 rounds of the draft and had a brutal schedule. R.C. might not have lost 77-0, but nothing was going to prevent a 4-8 (3-9 if Utah converts the 2pc) record.
2008 with Fran. Part of me thinks Fran resigned because he knew how bad the 2008 season would be and was a coward. 4-8 was going to happen regardless. Fran might not have lost to Arkansas State, but he was going to lose to Colorado and Iowa State.
2012 with Sherman. Might have won Florida, would have lost to Ole Miss, La. Tech, and Alabama as well as the bowl game.

That is basically my argument.
That shite is still shameful a decade plus later.

Sumlin meltdowns didn't have shite on Sherman's meltdowns. 2011 was such a joke of a season.
This. so much this... and to the 77-0 comment about it still stinging, 59-0 is pretty damn bad too. Should have seen it then but unfortunately I didn't, a good coach may lose some games badly, like by 21 points or something. But a good coach doesn't get blown out of the fu**ing water like that. That was an embarrassment

Here are the games for the last four coaches that they couldn't (or won't in the case of Sumlin) recover from:
-R.C. Slocum: Oklahoma 51, Texas A&M 6 (1999)
-Dennis Franchione: Oklahoma 77, Texas A&M 0 (2003). Iowa State 42, Texas A&M 14 (2005)
-Mike Sherman: Colorado 35, Texas A&M 34 (Normally, I would say Arkansas State 18, Texas A&M 14, but that team at least made a bowl. The 2009 Colorado team went 3-9 on the year. Even Oklahoma 66, A&M 28 was because we were that overmatched)
-Kevin Sumlin: Alabama 59, Texas A&M 0 (2014)
-R.C. Slocum: Oklahoma 51, Texas A&M 6 (1999)

Sherman won 9 games the following year and had a top 10 team two years later. He just wasn't a good coach, and him getting fired had nothing to do with the Colorado loss 24 months earlier.

Sumlin had top 10 teams the next two years. Teams that ultimately choked, but they clearly recovered from the Alabama beat down.
What you're saying makes no sense.

Actually, it did and here's why:
-Arkansas State 18, Texas A&M 14 (Halftime 14-3 A&M)
-Colorado 35, Texas A&M 34 (Halftime 21-10 A&M)
-Oklahoma State 38, Texas A&M 35 (Halftime 21-7 A&M)
-Oklahoma State 30, Texas A&M 29 (Halftime 20-3 A&M)
-Arkansas 42, Texas A&M 38 (Halftime 35-17 A&M)
-Missouri 38, Texas A&M 31 (4th quarter 28-17 A&M)
-Kansas State 51, Texas A&M 48 (2:00 4th quarter 31-21 A&M)
-t.u. 27, Texas A&M 25 (Halftime 16-7 A&M)

He was fired because of 2011,and 2011 alone.
Saying it was (in part) because of the Colorado game in Year 2 is just picking a data point to fit a narrative that every coach is doomed by a single bad loss.

No it didn't. You're making up stuff now. Sherman got his extension after that Colorado loss happened.
