had drinks with a guy who for many years was about as high up the food chain as you could get at A&M, and he still has big cigar contacts.

He told me - we have a new OC, its a done deal. The name that has been floated around on the internet is wrong (I assumed this meant Spurrier).

At this point I'm happy if its anyone other than Spav.

QUOTE: Sumlin is the most arrogant coach in football.

What do you base this on?

Just be spit-balling but could it also simply be that RB just realized he was setup w/misinformation to see if he was the internet leak and is butthurt he has been unceremoniously cut out from the circle of trust?

It's not like taking to twitter to cryptically point fingers at a "problem higher up" than Spav is something a person that truly has the ear of the power brokers within of the program does. That's the kind of shite a hanger on that has just been jettisoned tends to pull. A legit mover in the program would simply start calling up his buddies to get the ball rolling on finding a new coach.

You sound like posters on the Zoo who are reading way too much into Rusty's post, and getting mad at him for not saying exactly what you want to hear.

He doesn't work for TMF, doesn't cover Aggie sports full time, and isn't a journalist anymore. Obviously, he either talked to some people or simply changed his own opinion.

No he doesn't.

I do get that arrogant vibe from him from time to time though. Especially when he answers questions like he's Gregg Popavich and has won enough championships to get reporters to kiss his arse.

Pop answered questions like that before he was pop.

It's only now that he's had so much success that reporters actually report his lighter side and just come to expect his answers to stupid questions.

Sumlin isn't really that disrespectful to the media. That is blown way out of proportion

Oh I wasn't saying he isn't arrogant (which, when things are going swimmingly, people refer to as "confident." Amazing how success or lack thereof colors folks' perceptions of the same traits in a person). I was saying he doesn't treat the media worse than the coaches he named. In fact, he really doesn't treat them poorly in general. He just hasn't time for shite questions (and reporters ask a ton of those).

Pop behaved the same way with the media before the championships. Reporters kiss his arse NOW because of his success (they used to excoriate him for it), but Gregg Popovich didn't suddenly start acting surly towards the media when he'd won X amount of games.

People hated him for it in the beginning actually, and hated him in general, before he started winning. That approach is more than just accepted - it's celebrated - when you are a winner. But when you have a "no time for your BS" attitude with the press while losing, it does tend to exacerbate your problems.

Sports media members get really testy if you don't gargle their balls to proper satisfaction be it w/soundbites in interviews or something as petty as having activities to do in team's city they are covering.

I'll never get over how whiny the media was during the freak ice storm preceding the Super Bowl at Jerry World. They were so incredibly offended that DFW is spread out enough that they had to drive to certain events and had to traverse snow and ice to do so. They were literately bitching on all formats that the SB should never be played in a cold weather city again. Never in my life did I expect to hear DFW described as a cold weather location.

Sumlin could be a little better with the media, but you could say that about every coach (other than maybe Bill Snyder)

Comparing him to Urban is a joke. Urban is maybe the biggest bitch out there.

Yup. People don't know (or have forgotten) just how close Pop came to getting canned, especially after his (you guessed it) "arrogance" in firing the beloved HC at the time and installing himself as HC/GM.

If he had gone 5-9 to start the '99 season instead of 6-8, we're likely not discussing how great San Antonio has been as a franchise since the turn of the century and we damn sure aren't discussing Pop as one of the all time greats.

Bingo. Winning cures all. Losing throws shade on every approach, whether it's confident, boring, or placating.
