Too bad Tyler Johnson is not coming to the Super Bowl party. Be nice to get Green and Johnson.

Perroni: Super Bowl Sunday: A&M will have the state's best on campus

Texas A&M is hosting its first 'junior day' since the arrival of Jimbo Fisher as the Aggies welcome some of the state's top talent for a Super Bowl party. The prospects should start arriving late mornig and will have their chances to meet with the coaches throughout the day.

COMMITMENT WATCH?

Sunday's event will give A&M a lot of momentum but don't judge its success based on the number of commitments to come out of it. The class of 2019 is going to slow things down a little more than its predecessors, especially now that official visits are allowed for juniors, beginning in April. One prospect that is definitely on commitment alert, though, is Dallas Bishop Dunne four-star athlete Marquez Beason. The No. 55 overall prospect in the nation just saw his teammate, five-star safety Brian Williams, commit to the Aggies last weekend and A&M has the momentum with him as well. Previously wanting to play receiver, Beason is now open to corner and that's where A&M is recruiting him to play. Should he pull the trigger, it would already be the third national top-60 prospect and three of the top eight players in the state to already have committed to the Aggies. Though not expected to commit, local defensive tackle Josh Ellison from A&M Consolidated is high on the Aggies as are Houston-area four-star cornerbacks Erick Young and Bobby Wolfe. Houston North Forest offensive tackle Javonne Shepherd is not ready to commit yet but is high on A&M. Class of 2020 four-star cornerback Dwight McGlothern has been in College State since Friday evening.

A&M LOOKING TO FIRM UP GUNNELL Four-star quarterback Grant Gunnell has been committed to the Aggies since the summer but has taken trips to both LSU and TCU recently, with Arkansas also likely in the future. He made it to campus once right after Fisher was hired but this will be his first time back in Aggieland with a full coaching staff. Gunnell is a natural leader that a lot of other prospects would like to play with in college. Fisher and Darrell Dickey will likely spend a lot of time with him at the event and try to alleviate any concerns he may have.A&M will also probably try to get him to publicly re-affirm his commitment and refrain from taking any future visits. He will definitely not be given an ultimatum but they would obviously prefer he not make the trip to Arkansas or anywhere else.

WHAT TO DO AT RECEIVER

The class of 2019 is the deepest year of elite receivers in Texas in recent memory. A&M is going to have to figure out what it wants to do at the position. The Aggies have one commitment already in Chase Lane and played host to four prospects last weekend - Theo Wease, Arjei Henderson, Jordan Whittington and Dylan Wright - at the position. The first two would like to play together and A&M has serious momentum with both of them. A few more targets will be on campus Sunday in Kam Brown, Jalen Curry and Elijah Higgins, though he may be recruited as more of a tight end. Garrett Wilson was originally scheduled to be there but is not likely going to make it now. After these past two weekends, the Aggies should have a better idea of where they stand with each player and will start trying to figure out how the dominoes will fall there.

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE

A&M needs to load up on the defensive side of the ball in the class of 2019 and the good news is that a lot of defenders will be in College Station. In addition to Ellison, other defensive linemen expected are Converse Judson's DeMarvin Leal, Katy Taylor's Braedon Mowry, Katy Mayde Creek's Marcus Stripling and possibly Huntsville's T'Vondre Sweat. At defensive back, A&M is very high on Spring Dekaney corner Marcus Banks and he will be there after originally having other plans. Waxahachie safety Demani Richardson will be, too, in addition to Wolfe and Young.

NEVER TOO EARLY

Though most of the players in attendance will be juniors, there will be a few underclassmen there as well. In addition to McGlothern, other top sophomore targets expected are Aledo running back and Oklahoma commit Jase McClellan and Houston North Forest wide receiver Demond Demas. Bishop Dunne sophomore receiver Zeriah Beason, Marquez’ cousin, could also be offered. A&M's very early class of 2020 commit, Navasota offensive lineman Jordan Jefferson, will also be there. One big-time freshman will also be in attendance in Mesquite Horn linebacker Kendrick Blackshire. Though the 6-foot-2, 230-pound defender does not have an offer at the moment, that could change this weekend. POSSIBLE

NEW OFFERS

Though most of the players heading to town already hold A&M offers, a few do not. Blackshire is one to look for with a possible offer. Another is Fort Worth Southwest's Nnamdi Adim-Madumere. A high school receiver, A&M is intrigued by the 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior as a tight end. He averaged over 30 yards per catch this season and the Aggies have been by his school two weeks in a row. Even if an offer does not come on Sunday, he is definitely one to watch going forward. On defense, Manvel lineman Kori Roberson is a player the Aggies have been keeping a close eye on as well. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound defender is from a familiar school and showed in the playoffs that he could be a force in the trenches.

NEWS AND NOTES

A pair of Oklahoma running back commits junior Isaiah Spiller from Klein Collins and sophomore Jase McClellan from Aledo are expected to be there. Speedy Baylor receiver commit Jaylen Ellis will also be in town but he does not have an A&M offer at this point.

None of the players that visited last weekend with Team Texas Elite are expected back with the possible exception of one. After picking up an Alabama offer on Friday, Aledo cornerback Jeffery Carter is a 'maybe' on the list. Though the official visitors will already be gone from campus due to the NCAA's 48-hour rule, several of the unofficial ones such as Jordan Moore, Max Wright, Caleb Chapman, Leon O'Neal Jr. and Bobby Brown may stay around for the event

Horn247: Numerous Texas Priority Targets Headed to College Station Part A

Though it may not have seemed like it at this same time last year especially to A&M recruiting fans Texas was in prime position to rack up elite talent in the 2018 class.

As we all know Herman had a number of internal factors working for him: the balance of talent centered in the Houston area; his success while at U of H; a forward thinking vision for the program; and the all-important new car smell that nearly every coach not named Ed Orgeron gets the benefit of. External help came in the form of a long-stagnated Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M as well as well as the aforementioned Orgeron unable to create excitement around LSU.

This year won't be so easy. Orgeron still has his issues in Baton Rouge, but Texas A&M spent a mint on bringing in seasoned recruiter and owner of a not-too-far-in-the-distant National Championship, Jimbo Fisher. In 2019 the state's talent is much more evenly dispersed throughout the state. OU just made yet another playoff run and head man Lincoln Riley is every bit the enthusiastic recruiter Tom Herman is. All that is on top of the bad luck of Texas going 7-6, rather than, say, 9-4.

There's still plenty of reason for optimism heading into the 2019 cycle. While momentum from one class doesn't directly transfer to the next, it sure doesn't hurt that Texas is set to land a top 3 class, give or take. Those 2018 recruits will play long-term dividends in this cycle. They're already working, reference Caden Sterns' tweet from last night. To put it bluntly, we're headed for probably the bloodiest turf war since I've been covering recruiting for Inside Texas.

From a recruiting standpoint, each of Texas, OU, and A&M is going to be 'up'. Along with those schools, TCU sits in the 2nd tier alone as a legitimate threat to sneak an elite here or there.

Early in a cycle you'll see much more intersecting of common targets. As the months pass it becomes clear where certain guys are leaning and a school will branch out looking for contingencies. In a dream scenario, like UT's 2018 defensive back class, a school might not need to move on from priorities. Don't expect that to happen this year, or again, unless Texas begins to win big. For now, the elites will be heavily targeted from regional and national powers alike. Over the next couple months the cycle will settle some and trends will begin to establish. For now, it's chaos. We'll take a look at important and common targets the Aggies will be hosting, courtesy of our friends at TexAgs.

This is a highly distinguished list, which underlines the threat Fisher poses.

QB Grant Gunnell, St. Pius: I only mention him because if he fully buys in like safety Brian Williams he has the chance to become a multiplier for their class. He'll hit all the camps and all star games. If you don't think he can recruit, check St. Pius' roster. For UT's purposes it wouldn't be a bad thing if Gunnell wavered for some time but I think he is firmed up sooner rather than later.

WR Jalen Curry, St. Pius: The former Stafford wide receiver is very likely to end up where Gunnell does. If Curry chooses A&M soon there's your answer on Gunnell. He's a very good prospect but UT hasn't shown interest as of a week ago.

CB Marquez Beason, Bishop Dunne: He's had an interesting recruitment already. He de-committed from Nebraska the day after UT extended an offer. Nearly all of his offers at that time were for receiver. He then expressed interest in playing corner and offers began to rain for defense. He's a great athlete aside Garrett Wilson perhaps the best athlete for the position in-state. With his teammate being Brian Williams many feel the Aggies have the upper hand but when both were uncommitted I never had the feeling they were set on playing together. However, Williams at A&M sure won't hurt the Ags' chances. Beason isn't necessarily a must get but in a race to create momentum, if the Aggies gain a commitment from him soon it wouldn't be ideal. Take your time, Marquez!

Horn247: Numerous Texas Priority Targets Headed to College Station Part B

DB Bobby Wolfe, Houston Madison: I like that he could potentially play any position in the secondary. I'm not sure how I'd feel if he was figured solely for corner numbers, but in a four man class he brings a lot of versatility. He's under-rated by the networks.

CB Erick Young, Bush: Great build, also brings versatility but he's a corner-first prospect. He had a very busy January with offers picking up Texas in the process.

DL T'Vondre Sweat, Huntsville: He was considered a heavy A&M lean (who isn't early in the process?) but things seem to have evened out. That written, College Station and Huntsville are close and I can see the Aggies making a big push here.

OL Kenyon Green, Atascocita: Smart money is on A&M at this point but UT surely won't concede him. I expect the Greens to have a very busy spring and make the rounds. Freshly de-committed players rarely jump into another commitment early in a cycle. Green was at last year's Junior Day. Expect attendance again.

OT Javonne Shepherd, North Forest: UT was one of his first offers. Great evaluation by the staff. A&M might hold a slight edge not entirely sure but it's too early to worry. This will be a big couple months for Texas and likely the state's best left tackle prospect.

RB Isaiah Spiller, Klein Collins: Terrifically fluid runner with good size. Currently committed to OU but his dad played at A&M. I'm mildly surprised he doesn't hold a Texas offer but I'd bet he ends up in College Station regardless.

WR Garrett Wilson, Lake Travis: He was on campus yesterday. Texas is the most likely destination, after that is Ohio State. He's a must get. I like him for the slot but he can easily play outside.

WR Elijah Higgins, Austin Bowie: He's lived in Austin the last six years so he's pretty rooted in the area. He's had a huge recent run with offers from Texas, A&M, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Auburn, and others. He was also bumped to a four-star which makes my job easier. Pssst, he was a take when he was a three-star too. He brings a lot to the table. He might be a more explosive version of DeAndre McNeal.

DL DeMarvin Leal, Converse Judson: The state's best prospect and UT has recruited him accordingly. If he stays in-state UT is most likely.

DE Braedon Mowry, Katy Taylor: Aggie.

DL Marcus Stripling, Mayde Creek: Another player considered a strong Aggie lean early on. He's indicated he's more open than that. CB Jeffrey Carter, Aledo: He's a not-quite-as-explosive Curtis Brown, but he is bigger. Very fluid and could play receiver but his ceiling is corner. I'd love to see him in the UT class. Expect him to move up the rankings. Can't wait to see him at camps.

OLB/DL Nana Osafo-Mensah: Based on a recent picture I think he's headed for the defensive line. Plenty of bounce here. Notre Dame is a big threat.

CB Marcus Banks, Dekaney: He recently visited Alabama. He may be the best pure corner in the state. I feel UT needs to land one of he and Carter.

S Demani Richardson, Waxahachie: He's a big need for the class. He runs extremely well so he won't get 'tweenered' between safety and linebacker.

WR Kameron Brown, Colleyville Heritage: Recently de-committed from UCLA. Another inside/outside threat along with Wilson.

DE Marcus Hicks, Wichita Northwest (KS): He took an unofficial visit to Texas yesterday. That was his second visit in recent months. Fans love the OOS recruit but UT has plenty of domestic options.

WR Nnamdi Adim-Madumere, Fort Worth Southwest: Looks like an Alge Crumpler starter kid. I don't know much about him but he visited Texas yesterday.

2020's

WR Demond Demas, DB Dwight McGlothern, and RB Jase McClellan will also be in attendance along with some others. Demas has incredible athletic traits, McGlothern was recently offered by UT, and McClellan is committed to OU. As you can tell, this Junior Day is positively loaded for the Aggies. I expect most of these players to descend upon Austin this month, but it will be interesting to see if any of these guys drop in the Aggies' favor in the coming days.

I disagree with two of his assessments.

1. Texas is going to be up for 2019. After finishing top 5 in 18. Hard to go up from there. That and the talent is evenly spread throughout the state, we have the new hire (Herman factor last year) and Riley having a good season at OU and he’s a good recruiter... lends me to believe that they will be down (as compared to 18) and us and OU will be ‘up’.

2. His assessment that the Judson kid is the best in the state. It’s similar to pubes top 44. Anybody with an A&M lean is rated 3.x points hire vs a UT lean of around 1.x. Anybody who believes pubes 44 as a true rating of prospects is just an idiot. That said, there is nobody head and shoulders above each other in the top 5/6 in the state. They are all really good.

I'm convinced he uses 247 or rivals rankings as a template and adjusts accordingly.

To accurately study film and athletic ability throughout the state and then rank them seems like a task too big for the staff at TA. Too many athletes to cover with such small staff.

Just look at his rankings versus players A&M gets or has strong leans versus others. It’s comical the size of the discrepancy. Plus if they were as good as he has them ranked ... our results on the field would have been better regardless of the coach.

Adjust accordingly with huge bias...and no factual reason for the adjustment.

Study Gunnells film and tell me what you think his weaknesses are. I see two... I look with a critical eye... the guys positives are many - size, vision, leadership, his running (footwork) is good. His throws on the run are good. He can throw across his body very well. His stance when he throws is solid.

IMO his two weaknesses are:
1. He locks into receivers
2. He is a little off on his accuracy. I see receivers adjusting their speed a little especially on the medium to deep ball.

The kids got talent and both of those will get better. I love the “how is this guy not a 4/5 Star on texags on several prospects. It’s easy to see why most prospects are not.

Most high schools run single read passing concepts, even spread teams. You have a primary read, a checkdown and then you run. And good QBs can usually throw any receiver open against HS DBs.

It's really hard to assess a QBs ability to go through progressions in HS, because they either don't have many or don't need to. It's why QB recruiting is such a crapshoot, because it's less about physical dominance than the other positions and the skills that make you a great college QB just open aren't tapped into in HS.
