Gigem247:A&M recruiting: Friday VIP insider notes
Here are some updates on a few Texas A&M targets including one on a Midwest player who has legitimate interest in the program.
Detroit Cass Tech 4-star running back Jaren Mangham moved from the greater Houston area to the Midwest when he was in middle school. He still calls Texas home. Getting back home is something Mangham has been focusing on. Mangham has 42 reported offers. Of those 42, Texas A&M and Texas are two schools high on his list. The Aggies may have the advantage of the in-state schools, as he's grown up knowing and learning about the school. His mother ran track for the Aggies. "The traditions and alumni base is huge for life after football," said Mangham, who is a national top-300 player and rated a national top-25 athlete because of his ability to play linebacker at the next level.
Mangham took an unofficial visit to Texas A&M the weekend of Feb. 20 and said he enjoyed the experience. He told 247Sports that his mother was "so excited to see all the changes made" on the campus. Mangham is being recruited by defensive coach Mike Elko. "Coach Elko and the entire staff showed me great love," he said.
Isaiah Spiller is one of the premier running backs of the 2019 class. The Klein Collins 4-star standout also is the son of Fred Spiller, who played tight end at Texas A&M in the late 1990s and early 2000s. So when the younger Spiller committed to Oklahoma on Nov. 21, it left Aggie fans with a lot of questions. And speaking with the nation's No. 2 all-purpose back, per the 247Sports Composite, it'll take a lot for him to reconsider his decision. "I'm pretty solid with them. That's the best place for me," Spiller said. "It fits me because I can catch [the ball], and they will run the ball a lot."
Spiller's decision happened with the old coaching staff in place. That's one thing Jimbo Fisher, running backs coach Jay Graham and the rest of the staff can use as they continue to push for the 6-foot-1, 185-pound athlete. Spiller was at the Super Bowl Sunday event in College Station, and he said he's keeping Texas A&M as a school to watch. "My dad still tries to convince me, and I'm going to take A&M into consideration," he said. "They're a good school. I like Coach Fisher, and I like Coach Graham. I've been there a couple of times, so [the visit] really wasn't nothing new to me. But the coaches were new, and I got a new feel of them."
Another player locked in to this pledge with Oklahoma is Austin Stogner. Ranked the nation's No. 2 tight end per the 247Sports Composite, Stogner has been committed to the Sooners since June 23. But that doesn't mean other teams aren't trying to flip him. Stogner said two schools that he's hearing from the most are Texas A&M and LSU. Stogner said he still hears from coach Tim Brewster and is intrigued by his coaching resume. A flip to Texas A&M isn't likely at this time, but Stogner said he'll always have his recruiting door ajar -- and with this new Texas A&M staff, that's all that's needed in many cases.
"I like A&M a lot. Coach Brewster's put 11 tight ends in the league," Stogner said. "He's a great coach. He's telling me that he can take me to that next level." Stogner also added: "I'm 100 percent committed to Oklahoma. I've been that way since I committed."
IMG Academy 2020 safety Lejond Cavazos has one of the better names in college football recruiting. He also has a solid game to match. Now with 20 reported offers, Cavazos was re-offered by the new Texas A&M staff on Tuesday. Cavazos, who played high school ball in Texas before transferring to IMG, is a 6-foot-1, 190 -pound safety who also excels in track and field. Elko has been in contact with Cavazos, and that relationship has been strong for a few months. "I was very excited when I got the re-offer because it came from Coach Elko, who I've had a previous relationship with at Notre Dame," Cavazos said. "I can see myself playing for him and Jimbo!" Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama and Miami are other schools to keep an eye on in Cavazos' recruitment.
Allen, Texas, 4-star quarterback Grant Tisdale doesn't have a Texas A&M offer, but he's a player to watch as the coaching staff continues to offer 2019 players. Fresh off winning a UIL Class 6A state championship, Tisdale has 15 reported offers and is coming off a season where he threw for 2,100 yards and 30 touchdowns and rushed for 1,090 yards and 15 touchdowns. He is ranked the nation's No. 8 dual-threat quarterback. Tisdale was on campus for Texas A&M's last junior day, and he gave the visit high praise. He said he's been in touch with offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey.
"It was really just great to see A&M," Tisdale said. "They probaly have one of the best facilities I've seen so far. Everything was top-notch, and it was great to meet everyone on the new coaching staff. Coach Dickey said he really loved my film and really liked what I bring to the table. He said he will be around during spring ball to watch me throw and see where it goes from there." Tisdale has offers from Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Baylor, Ole Miss and others.

Erik McCoy and Jorvorskie Lane's cousin committed. 6'7" OLB that looks like he's built like DJ Hogg.

Dude's either gonna be the next Jason Taylor or never play a single down of college football. He's too athletic not to succeed if he adds a ton of weight, but he does need to add A TON of weight. Like 50+ pounds.

Does Bama or LSU find these basically unrated diamonds in the rough? I just see so much safer plays on guys we are leading for.

Maybe they’ve got their own version of Harvey Updyke? Front runners are everywhere

Same here, I’m still shocked that he hasn’t contacted chicken and demanded that it be changed, but maybe he sees it is free exposure

I sat next to a guy at the Bama game this year that lives in Texas and goes to high school games for Bama. I'm sure most schools do this.

Thanks. I struggle with how low he’s rated. Those bama guys had a decent offer list. Hopefully we’ll get to see some film. Again... I trust Jimbo... there are just so many takes in this years class ... just seemed early to offer him.

I don’t think we’re taking guys to take them. Jimbo and co made it clean on how they finished last years class. They didn’t reach to fill out the class. They see upside and they locked it down. He’s got a hoops background so I’m hoping he basically a defensive version of Mike Evans.

The two guys cited by Farmer did in fact get a decent offer list at the end, but it didn't actually develop until in the month or so before signing day. Moody, for example, did not get a legitimate P5 commitable offer until December 2017. Bama offered a week before signing day. I suspect as the season starts up you will see these guys get an offer or two from other programs.
