What in-state 2019 football recruits think of Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M By Max Olson

LINK

KATY, Texas — Surrounded by the top recruits in Houston for the class of 2019, Bobby Wolfe got right to work. He didn’t leave The Opening Houston regional without getting in the ear of all his buddies about why they better join him at Texas A&M.

Wolfe, the state’s No. 2-ranked cornerback recruit from Madison High School in Houston, committed to the Aggies three weeks ago and is recruiting for them with overwhelming passion. When he’s asked about coach Jimbo Fisher and A&M, he speaks in exclamation points.

“Everybody’s excited about Jimbo coming!” Wolfe told The Athletic. “Everybody’s turnt up! That boy got a national championship! He’s bringing that to A&M! We already know. We’re about to take the SEC.”

His enthusiasm is understandable and a byproduct of Fisher’s all-out recruiting blitz in his first few months on the job, an initial push that has the Aggies emerging as the in-state power for this cycle. Early feedback on the impression the $75 million head coach is making on top in-state talent has been exceedingly positive.

Fort Bend Bush’s Erick Young, the state’s No. 1 cornerback according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, summarizes the state’s present dynamics in simple terms: “A lot of people say 2018 went to Texas and 2019 is going to A&M.”

The Aggies recently landed pledges from two of the state’s best juniors, safeties Brian Williams and Demani Richardson, and have seven pledges for a class that ranks No. 4 nationally early on. Hot starts like these are common for new coaches recruiting their first full class because kids tend to get enamored by “new.” But top recruits who competed at The Opening Houston said it’s the combination of Fisher’s credibility and the SEC advantage that’s pushing A&M in front.

“He’s been trying to tell us if we all stay in Texas, we all can win a national championship,” four-star Mayde Creek defensive end Marcus Stripling said.

What is Fisher doing right? He started by hiring an impressive staff full of established recruiters. Together they hit the ground running for 2019, getting their key targets on campus multiple times in January and February.

The Aggies held their first junior day event before signing day, a get-together on Super Bowl Sunday. They’re working fast and catching up quickly on the relationship-building component of these battles. A&M’s aggressive approach seems especially effective in a year when recruits can now take spring official visits and in some cases are expediting their decision timelines.

“I think people like the new staff,” four-star cornerback Marcus Banks said. “They come in and they’re all about business. You can tell they’re gonna come in and win games, definitely.”

Atascocita High School offensive tackle Kenyon Green, the state’s No. 1-ranked recruit, said he has the Aggies high on his list along with Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU and Texas, and his initial bond with Fisher is a big reason why.

“Jimbo is a great man,” Green said. “My grandparents loved him, too. That was the crazy part. They loved everything about him. They really like A&M. My family likes A&M, and I like A&M, too.”

Young wore an Oklahoma jacket to the Nike camp and says he’s not looking to make a decision until August. He joked that Wolfe has been calling him every day urging him to commit and noted that every assistant coach on the A&M staff has chipped in on recruiting him, too. But he pointed to Fisher’s efforts as being the most meaningful.

“I just vibe with him. I don’t know what it is, it’s just something,” Young said. “It just clicks. He’s that guy. You take him seriously. Wherever he goes, they’re gonna win. And everybody wants to win.”

So what does all this mean for the Aggies’ rivals? Texas enjoyed the same momentum in the 2018 cycle, signing the nation’s No. 3 class — including 11 of the state’s top 15 recruits — in Tom Herman’s first year on the job. This greater Houston area was remarkably loaded with talent last year, and Herman and his staff won out there in landing six of the area’s 10 best recruits.

The Longhorns have followed up that killer class by taking a seemingly more patient approach for 2019. Their lone commit, four-star quarterback Roschon Johnson, made his pledge last summer. They’re firmly in the mix for all of these uncommitted targets and not pressuring recruits to lock in early decisions. There’s plenty of time left to combat the hype building around A&M, but it’s not going to be easy.

The battles among Fisher, Herman and the rest of the recruiting heavyweights in this region promise to be intense over the next 11 months. And Wolfe is excited to help wage those battles this offseason. The four-star corner has a long wish list he’s working on to join him in College Station next year.

He brings up Young first, and he’s been working on Banks, too. He mentions he needs elite in-state receivers Arjei Henderson, Theo Wease, Jalen Curry and Elijah Higgins. And that’s just to start off.

“I’m trying to get everybody,” Wolfe said. “I’m trying to make a Dream Team, literally. We need the top talent at A&M. It’s simple.”

A&M is getting all

Green will be at A&M. I actually feel less confident about the receivers than anything else. Feel good about both Mowrey and Stripling, Carter, Banks, and Cupp. It’s going to be a great class

How’s your class looking. We’ve out ranked y’all once since 2000. Are we going to do it in 2019?
