bigger paycheck from LSU, they didn't play ball,

You swung and missed hard on this one, he wanted job security and a change from getting all the blame even though he was more than holding up his end with lsus defense

Sumlin had some master scheme going to whole time is misguided in my opinion. And that does not give me confidence heading into a new OC hire....

Not saying he has a master scheme but he did show us last year that he knows how to handle a search for the top people in the right way. If not Chavis; we would have Foster right now. He quietly and purposefully took care of business last year, I'm sure he can do the same this year. He knows what is at stake

Aka: more money or longer guaranteed contract which = more money. We were willing LSU wasn't. That's why he's here and not still there.

To each his own, The Sumlin is a great hire-er because of chief doesn't really tell with the rest of his coaching staff hires as of late. really the only position coaches that I would say are considered good or great hires would be chief, price, and our special teams coach I can't recall the name of at the moment.

BL said today Allen would have stayed if he could have gotten assurances Spav was staying.

Spavital and Kyler Murray. Those will be some interesting sideline sights. I hope ESPN keeps a camera on our sideline at all times during our bowl.

Chavis leaving LSU had nothing to do with money and everything to do with the termination clause in his contract tying him to Miles

Penn State just hired Fordham's HC as their OC.

Even they know better than to let Spavital rape their offense.

To me, the much bigger concern is that we don't have a new OC yet.

I can see a scenario where the new OC signs off on Spav sticking around in a different/reduced role, so I understand why he hasn't been let go yet.

And I could understand the delay in hiring a new OC until after all the HC positions were filled.

But now that that's done, and a bunch of schools are making OC hires (UT, PSU, UGA all within the last 24 hours), not sure why we're so late to the party. And it doesn't reflect well on Sumlin.

BL says Sumlin is actively looking for a new OC and he has no clue why Sumlin hasn't fired Spav yet. He says the situation has been mishandled "to a degree"

The problem is there aren't any elite OCs in the market right now running an offense remotely similar to what we want to run.

I think Sumlin is going to have to dip down into DII to find a good match, which is going to require some time and investigation. The only other explanation is we hired clemsons OC or someone similar, which is doubtful.

We need a play caller, so we aren't going to reach out for another QB coach. It's just going to take some time I believe.

I believe we have the money to lure Meachem. I wish Sumlin would go that route.

Hiring a D2 guy seems just as risky as hiring a QB coach or non-play calling OC.

Agree that there just aren't surefire prospects out there. But he's had quite a bit of time to get the ball rolling. Somewhat disconcerting that there's zero smoke, especially with a lot of our peers already making moves.

FWIW, so people with traditionally good info are saying on 247 it's 50/50 whether Sumlin will be back next year. Apparently he doesn't want to be here any more than many of us want him here.

That's not a huge concern. Many contracts run until December 31, so waiting is usually the game that gets played (like we did with Chavis). Also, if our new OC is in a bowl game then there is a good chance Sumlin wants to wait it out.

Remember, Sumlin is a super secretive guy. He managed to keep the DC hire under a tight seal. His executive decisions usually don't get leaked or get leaked very late. Give it time. I'm sure Sumlin is going to want to keep Spavital as a QB coach or in some capacity since they are buddies (though he'd be a dumbass if he did). Firing Spavital or demoting him now without having an OC lined up or announced would hurt recruiting.
