Random meaningless thoughts post-Starkvegas abortion

So as some of you know I made the trip to Starkville and I can firmly say that if you ever get the chance go ahead and pass on that. It’s a small, poor, rural gump town that happens to have a college. Starkville is everything Texas fans make fun of College Station for being.
I genuinely thought we were gonna blow their doors off in the second half after the late TD to go up 10-7. State looked dejected and disinterested and I firmly believe had we held on 3rd down on their opening drive and not given up the TD they were prepared to fold. That TD pass was the play of the game because it changed the mood of the entire stadium. I like State fans expected the team to pack it in and that gave them new life. I also think if we catch even half those dropped passes we win the game. Don’t know if you could see from home but the receiver slip screen that was dropped early in the game (first drive I think) was gonna either be a touchdown or close to it.
There are a good number of starters who will hopefully be replaced by next season. Both of our starting OTs need to be replaced. I think by mid-season next year our starting OL will be Green/Reed/McCoy/Hocker/Soneone not Dan Moore or Carson Green. Woof.
Our secondary is not good but they are serviceable until forced to cover downfield without safety help. They lack recovery speed and high point ball skills. Derrick Tuvker is the one I would say who qualifies as awful right now. Don’t know what happened because he looked good late last year. Again, I expect a mostly new secondary next year. I could actually see one of the freshman starting at corner and Renfro moving to safety. We’ll have two freshman secondary starters by the meat of conference play next year I’d imagine.
Our front 7 is technically and schematically sound and they get great push but nobody gets to the QB particularly well. They can get upfield and disrupt but lack the pass rush repitoire to consistently get around their man.
I would not be surprised if Corbin has more carries than Williams next year. He’s better at everything except pass protection.
Mond is not getting much help but he doesn’t do his receivers any favors either. He consistently throws high and backpedals too often instead of stepping up. I want to see him with better OL play but I could see him losing his job to Foster next year (who has much better HS film than Mond did). Foster has a better arm and is a more natural, elusive runner. Starkel is already looking around I hear, go ahead and count him gone.
We need more speed and playmaking ability at receiver. I’m surprised Preston hasn’t seen more snaps because he’d immediately be our fastest receiver. This is another spot where older guys could get pushed out next year.
Overall this type of loss was bound to happen the way we play. We are a very slow team and just generally lack talent at key spots. We don’t have a true OT or cover corner on this roster right now (thanks Sumlin). We’re playing the long game now boys and 2018/2019 will not be great teams. We will be better offensively next year but the front 7 will take a step back. We need to string top-5 classes together and aim for 2020 or 2021.

I could see Luke Matthews breaking in to the starting lineup and also Blanton. I can't believe how big of a bust Diesch has been, pretty much given up on him so far.

We should have a strong receiving corps next year with Preston, Davis, Ausbon, and Sternberger. I could see Chapman and Dylan Wright being possible deep threats next year. Obviously haven't seen Chapman play and I know he is recovering from a bad injury but based on his senior film he looks like he could be a rich man's Rogers.

Sound advice, but it will be ignored by the wider fanbase after the bowl this year. The TexAgs crowd is going to continue to work themselves into a frenzy over freshmen starters as the answer (it almost never is). Next year people are going to expect marked improvement, and while it may happen in some areas, our secondary is so terrible that you can't fix it in just one year.

This. I'm impressed nearly every time he touches the ball.

Pussies need noise makers. State fans had both cowbells and shakers with the popping thing in the handle. 2 artificial noise makers. Giant gaping pussies. Our offense also sucks.

They are supposed to stop once the opponent breaks the huddle. Of course they all listen and obey...

It seemed like they would only really (mostly) stop for the last 10 seconds or so of the play clock. They for damn sure don't stop right when the huddle breaks.

Can’t decide if our secondary or cowbells are worse TBH

The shame of it is Renfro and Oliver are talented players who do a lot well. Both are great in press and great in run/screen support. They just lack any semblance of recovery speed or ball skills.

Had offensive line problems all year. This defense was a bad matchup for our offensive line. LSU D is a bad matchup for this offensive line. If Mond plays a Bama or Clemson type game with his feet and arm, we have good chance. If he has an average Mond day then yuk...
Doesn't matter who is QB, running back, or catching the ball. When you have guys in your backfield almost immediately then nothing is really going to work outside of Mond just being creative and that is asking waaaay too much of anyone.

Renfro should be playing safety IMO
