HUGE

Just a huge, huge win for us. Thank you, Jesus and Coach Sumlin.

Say Sumlin closes with a top 10 class, is it that much harder to justify letting him go for another 8-5?

It would be damn near impossible for us to have a top 10 class with us only taking 18 kids, and the haul of 3* kids already committed.

So answer the question...if he pulls a top 10 class, but goes 8-5, what then

I don't think the math works out for us to end up top 10, but I follow where you are headed and pretty much agree...

Let's say he gets a commitment from Joseph Ossai (not at all a stretch) and then holds the class he has together 'till signing day. All but the most crazed negative haters would be pretty damn happy with that class. If he also finishes 8-5, that class IS going to go a long way to assuaging the frustration over another 8-5 season.

People are going to say "it's not really him, A&M recruits itself now", but those voices will be drowned out. You might say "Strong had good classes but was fired anyway." But Strong went 5-7 on repeat, not 8-5, which is a big difference in football, and was RETARDED to the point that he couldn't really speak English.

I'm NO Sumlin fan, y'all know that, but I have to call it like I see it, and a class like this is a helluva insurance policy should he go 8-5 again. Don't think it saves him if he goes 6-6, but if it holds together and he goes 8-5 again I'm calling my shot now that he's not getting fired.

If we land only Ossai from here out it will be a huge disappointment. Our class would be fringe top 15 at best. 8-5 record with only Ossai added to this class would = termination.

Think we are likely taking more than 21 guys this class tho. Ossai (DE), Brown (DT) and Waddle (WR) are top priorities from this point forward and we are in good position with all of them. Waddle and Ossai have said very recently that we are their leaders. Waddle is a composite top 70 recruit and Ossai is at a position of need. Bobby Brown is likely deciding between us and Bama but I think we are in good shape. He's very close with his mother so I see him sticking close to home.

EDIT: Misread Sarge's question. 8-5 but closes with a top 10 class? That's almost oxymoronic but I'll play along and say in that scenario he keeps his job if he gets 8 regular season wins but loses the bowl game. 8 reg season wins would be pretty good this year although that bowl loss would really hurt. 7 reg season wins with a bowl win and he's fired.

Mindsets like this are how Billy Kennedy got a 7-year guaranteed contract extension after 1 tournament appearance in 5 years.

If Sumlin gets any sort of extension to his contract after another 8-5 season for "recruiting purposes", then there's no hope for A&M football in my lifetime.

BK is going to officially put your mind at ease this season.

Yeah, but that IS the A&M mindset.

I'm not say that's what I want, just saying that's how it would play out under those circumstances.

I didn't mean ONLY Ossai. I mean we have recruiting momentum and it's actually defensive guys for once and Ossai is likely next. He follows through like he likely will and we seem like the class to join and get another couple of targets. If it finishes borderline top 10, and we finish 8-5, the narrative - correct or not, like it or not - is going to be "it was a young team, boy he sure can recruit, if only the 2013 class hadn't been a total bust..." and that narrative is going to prevail.

Unfortunately for those of us who think Sumlin needs to go, the 2018 team looks stacked on paper especially if Kirk follows through and plays all 4 years. We could potentially return all 11 offensive starters, our entire two-deep LB corps and 6/8 on the two-deep in the secondary.

All Sumlin needs to do is have a winning record this year to give the "wait till next year" narrative a chance to work. And knowing our cuckold fanbase it will.

Yup. Finish this class strong and hold onto it, win 7 or 8 games, and the media talking up "young A&M's great future and strong recruiting", combined with our cucked fanbase, will do Sumlin's sales pitch for him. His staff's recruiting combined with Hugh Freeze's departure have made his seat a lot cooler all of a sudden. If he just bombs this season or is involved in a scandal, he's done for. But on the other hand if he has a winning season, keeps this class together and especially if Starkel shows promise as the QB of the future, he's not going anywhere. Particularly if Starkel is good, because the biggest knock on him is the QB graveyard that his tenure has been so far.

Yep, if he finishes with 8 wins and signs a great class, it would be hard to ax him.

But like CGSC said, how do you keep him without extending his contract?

I guess we differ on the definition of "stacked"

Aside from Trayveon Williams and maybe Keke and Alaka it's a bunch of 3 and 4* recruits who have proven nothing at the D1 level.

Pretty much every team in the SEC fits that definition

Jordan Whittington and Jaylen Waddle announced on twitter last night that they would be committing at the same time and to the same school as a package deal. Certainly seems like a ploy for Texas to take Waddle seeing how they've cooled on him recently after grabbing another slot WR. Whittington is a '19 prospect who is a take for every school at all times. Very disappointing that after they stalled on recruiting Waddle and didn't even offer Whittington at WR until he was set to announce that we couldn't reel these guys in. Two huge misses

Also, don't be surprised if Whittington is a national top 25 prospect next year. Special talent. My favorite in the '19 class right now. Behind Gunnell of course
