I didn’t think so. He’s gotta have some folks he knows before taking that kind of risk.

Maybe it works out, but I don't like A&M operating a learn-on-the-job situation.

Agree, not like we need to go cheap. Like I said before, Elko has plenty of credit in the bank but that can be chewed through pretty quick having to train two new coordinators and being the HC in this league.

For OC - Elko’s comments alluded to their focus on maintaining their offensive philosophy. In other words, keep the consistency. So Wifgins keeps everything intact…same concepts, same language, etc.

Wiggins is also strong recruiter. He just needs to get comfortable with playcalling. Thats the risk.

For DC - Williams is probably the equivalent role of Bateman, primarily coaching linebackers, considering Elko maintains overall control of that side of the ball.

The good thing about Wiggins at OC is he won’t be taking over play calling duties till after this season. That gives him a full spring, summer and fall camp to work out the kinks and hopefully have a smooth takeoff next season. It’s not like he’s being thrown in immediately

My simple heuristic on coaching hires: how would I feel if Texas hired someone similar?

And in this case, I would love if Sark hired a DC counterpart (the most important position on a staff with an offensive HC) with zero experience managing a defense and everything that comes with it - play calling, in-game adjustments, mid-season adjustments, growth and expansion of the scheme over the offseason

Elko was able to navigate a poor DC, he likely won't have the same ability to navigate even an average OC, so I am not a fan of going with a comfort hire over shaking every tree in the forest to find the best coordinator possible.

Elko’s a smart guy. The downside to brining in a new guy is having to learn a whole new language for the offense.

But the upside is having someone with the experience to call great plays in crunch time situation, and to have the creativity to build new plays from existing formations.

I just hope Wiggins is able to draw up some new plays and add some new wrinkles. Because the only way to gain experience is to be put in those situations. But he’s already proven to be a rockstar in recruiting.

I will be so glad when Collin Klein is gone. He is a terrible play caller.

Im glad we're doing everything we can to run the same offense next year instead of using the OC opening to try to get a whole lot better

Mazzone was the most incompetent OC at A&M since Babers. He was more about drinking with Sumlin than play calling.

I mean, Jimbo in 2022 was just awful.
