That's a massive misconception. There's a talent gap, but let's not pretend like he doesn't scavenge for talent. He has hit the portal and recruited fairly well.

Hugh Freeze had no issue at Ole Miss. Now I'm not saying we should hire that creep, but it's not impossible to recruit well at Ole Miss or beat Alabama.

We aren’t hiring a proven elite coach. There’s what, 4 or 5 of those, maybe less depending on your definition? There’s some projection involved in the process

We could go back and forth all day but I think our opinions probably won’t change

His stints at USC and Tenner make me gunshy with Lane. He would fix the offense for sure but his teams have never really played defense.

247 does composite rankings that includes both HS and transfers. They are consistently lower than us.
Freeze did well in some big games. They took a flier on him after one good year at Arkie St. I hope you aren’t proposing we take a similar risky flier.

Fisch still in it...timing with P12 champ game possibilities (meeting maybe tomorrow)
Note on Nat'l coverage...It is not connected except for very few...take what you hear outside of close A&M sources with grain of salt
Guys like Fickell and Rhule and Lanning...buyout too much.
Ryan Day...situation gets interesting...buyout high...originally told not much interest from Day camp...but all the smoke and there is true interest...but buyout is prohibitive...Day probably stays in Columbus. But never know. OSU dissatisfaction may come into play.
DeBoer...no secret there is interest there. (Process has been insanely thorough) He is a stud!! He creates chaos for other teams. Timing is major hurdle...He is so dialed in with chances of P12 and CFP that it is holding up progress. No guarantee we get him if we wait. That is the risk with DeBoer. If they keep winning we miss out on multiple candidates. commercial break

Some guy on the coaching board is saying Matt Rhule will be named soon. Cannot see it but wouldn’t be remotely opposed. So many good options out there besides Elko

I remember Rhule getting mentioned but people said they weren’t going to pay the buyout. Getting to crunch time

I think it's a risk worth taking, even if it means losing players to the portal or on other coaching candidates. Worst case scenario, we hire an up and coming offensive coordinator to be our HC. Give him a cheap buyout and keep Durkin. It allows us some financial breathing room if he happens to fail.
