The good

1: I know it’s an FCS opponent, but we couldn’t consistently block Nicholls State or ULaLa last year. Our OL did what they should do against a team like this: Dominate. Erik McCoy is an animal and maybe the best run-blocking center in CFB. Dude had 1-2 pancakes per drive. Also, snaps are much better.

2: Kellen Mond looks like a different player. He’s form and delivery have improved tremendously. He tends to stare down receivers but then his first read was usually open against this team. His TD pass that was dropped by Buckley was a throw even many NFL QBs can’t make. I will say his mobility is overrated, he has straight line speed but he goes down pretty easily under pressure.

3: Jhamon Ausbon catches everything and runs really good short and intermediate routes. Reminds me a lot of Jeff Fuller.

4: Sternberger runs NFL caliber routes. Dude got open whenever he wanted and could have easily had 1-2 more TDs if Mond had spotted him on seam routes where he ditched the linebacker with ease.

5: Starting front 7 on defense is the best we’ve had since at least 2012. Again it’s NWST, but the starting DL blew the OL up every play and had they ran a more conventional spread passing attack instead of getting out in 0.5 seconds every time there would have been numerous sacks.

6: We lack elite RB talent but we have a bunch of solid to good players. Trayveon could run for 1500 yards if we spam him against the other OOC pushovers and OM/Kentucky/Arkansas like we did on Thursday. He’s a guy who needs to get to the second level untouched to really be effective but he can GO once he gets there. He doesn’t have elite speed but he manages to rarely get caught.

The bad

1: Our secondary is SLOW. Teams with speed at wideout will give us fits. Even these FCS receivers were running by us with ease, thankfully they rarely had time to take shots.

2: Our receivers outside of Ausbon concern me. They struggled getting separation against an FCS secondary and we lack vertical speed.

3: Our backup (aka walk on) linebackers are not good at football. It didn’t pop out at first glance but watching them in the second half was like watching a 2A HS game as far as linebacker play. They would hit the wrong gap and then get blown up by a 250 pound OL.

4: We HAVE to have a better PR option than Paul

It’s a fair assessment.

Trayveon changes direction so well without losing top end speed. That’s why he appears faster than he probably is.

I completely agree with all your bad. Years of recruiting slow 6 4 corners is coming home to roost. There will be plenty of PT available for our stud CB class we have committed.

Buckley seems to get open a lot (last year too) but hands are an issue. I think he has potential as a slot guy though.

I am less concerned about our receiving corps because Sternberger looks like the kind of guy who can fill the gap.

But one bad I will say is O’Neal needs to chill the frick out. The bad boy routine was cute when he was a recruit but it’s time to grow up.

We do have an issue with speed at CB, but their top two receivers are actually FBS transfers, one from LSU, the other Texas Tech.

Also I really wish we landed Waddle. He would be an enormous difference maker for us this year

The DB slowness observation is totally valid, but their top WRs were legit. I'm really not sure why the big dude (forgot his name) was in FCS.

Jazz Ferguson, he had off field issues at LSU and was suspended and then decided to transfer, I’m guessing it was drug test.

He was a top 300 player before he went to LSU

Buckley is good at blocking to help out the run game. That was a bad drop in the end zone, but I think he caught the others thrown his way. I suspect Jimbo likes his attitude to help out any way he can on a play.

This was my instant take. I wasn’t excited about our prospects with Mond under center, but he looks the part so far.

Our secondary has always been awful. It's practically a tradition.

The #1 uniform is cursed for any letterman to wear. Avoid at all costs.

If you haven't dropped the game from your DVR yet, go back and the first TD in the 3rd Q. It's amazing: not only did Trayveon go untouched, Erik McCoy went untouched!!! I've never seen that. The 2 DTs looped outside and it was a total parting of the seas. He runs for about 15 yards looking for somebody to hit, and by that time Tray is in the EZ.

NWSt was very un-sound. By that I don't mean, "bad" - but that they gambled alot. It was a very high risk/reward scheme that also resulted in the 2 sacks they had.

During Trayveon Williams' first touchdown run, watch the block that Sternberger throws at the end. He takes the one defender that could have made a play and pushes him into one of his teammates, taking them both out.
