You surely get it by now, don't you, Sarge? Roger is laughing at your 11-1 projection because there is NO WAY A&M is getting to 11-1. He knows this as certainly as he did that A&M would not make the Sweet 16. Damn I wish we had that picture. Credit him for kinda sorta living up to the claim, but that pic has multiple uses.

We have a decent shot at going 11-1, though LSU is a terrible matchup for us and we'll need to beat OM in a shootout.

However barring an unforeseen set of circumstances, we will win neither a national or conference title and will take a sizable step back for the next season or two at least due to our recruiting dropping off over the past 18 months. And at the end of the day, continuing to reward anything less is just unacceptable to me.

You laughed at this projection a few posts ago.

I agree, though maybe not so much about Ole Miss. I think Trayveon Williams/Keith Ford will have career days against them. LF and Guice still scare me, though.

Here's the gotcha line. If we don't win the division against possibly the best Alabama team of all time, then we're a failure. Gotcha. And frick next year. Nobody anywhere knows what is going to happen next year.

If Sumlin wins out this year (11-1), he would finish the season at 48-17 after 65 games, 4.5 games behind Slocum's pace (52-12-1)

Slocum did that in arguably a much easier conference as well. We don't have a Baylor, Rice, Tech, SMU, and TCU as conference games now.

If we win out, I believe Sumlin will own the A&M all-time most wins over ranked opponents after only 5 seasons. So yeah, I think you could "arguably" say it's a tougher conference.

Seems like we have to. He would have three years left on the deal right? That is bad for recruiting.

just a dirty secret in this business. No one ever gets an extension for recruiting reasons. You just announce you have agreed to an extension and then never actually sign it.

Is that what Auburn did last year?

I don't know the details of the Gusbus situation but if he complained that he was getting neg recruited, that could easily be what they did.

At some point the contract has to be executed because of FOIA requests. But that's often delayed using things like "we're still hammering out the fine points" and/or "the BOR doesn't meet til..." It's actually pretty easy for new contracts to take up to 6 months from agreement to execution without dragging your feet much. If trying, you can extend that out almost a year.

In the mean time, you tell Gus, hey if you are top 10 on Nov 1st or finish the year ranked or whatever date/threshold you have for him, we'll execute it. This gives a coach every chance to succeed which is all ADs want. If he starts the year 2-3 and you fire him (as almost happened), you negotiate a settlement and no one is ever the wiser.

Do we give him another extension?

I think we have to. And why wouldn't we? He isn't "Saben", but who is? He's a top 5 SEC coach at this point.

If we got rid of Sumlin, who the frick would we get? I like my chances with KS at this point.

Sumlin has too many glaring flaws as a head coach to give him a second extension without a single division let alone conference title. The least of which not being the fact that he lacks the Xs and Os knowledge to step in on either side of the ball and thus requires gurus like Chavis and KK to prop him up.

He has many of the flaws Dabo has, but Dabo is a much better recruiter, has actually won conference titles and doesn't have the character flaws and program mismanagement that people use to recruit against Sumlin.

This sounds good in theory until you account for the fact that you have Alabama using Full Djinn Equip in your own division

Debatable. Also, Dabo doesn't have nearly the in-state competition.

I agree. The problem is that you can't really compare Sumlin's situation to most any other coach in the country. Hardly anyone else has to play Invincibility Cheat Code Alabama every year. We have to recruit and play maybe the most dominant coach of maybe to most dominant (after Miami) dynasty EVER, every year. So it's pretty much impossible for us to win our division, and more than that, every year they beat us up physically and steal our souls, leaving us to play down against our remaining schedule.

No

He does have consistent top-10 program and the best Louisville team ever in his division though, and he's still gonna win it most likely while going undefeated...again.

Regardless, I want a coach who expects to beat Bama. Not one that will compete for 3rd-6th every year. I'm consistently asked to apologize for having high expectations on this board and simply won't do it.

Let's not act like Sumlin would be running through the ACC. MAYBE one of his teams would have won that conference, and that's if the 2012 team didn't play FSU or Clemson early in the season. We'd lose to Clemson and Louisville this year.

No Roger, you are called out for not applying logic It's like saying the first place winner in the women's Marathon is a better athlete than a second place winner in the men's marathon
