Deep down LSU fans know it's unlikely their next coach duplicates Miles' success

They speak of hunger like a man who has never missed a meal.

We're almost 20 years since they sucked. They've forgotten what it is like and are cavalier about it. firing Miles mid season was the karma equivalent to firing Tom Landry over the radio. They look at Alabama and think "we could be that good" when they should be looking at PSU, USCw, Michigan, Miami, Texas, and the long list of power programs who have struggled in the wilderness for long periods.

They will not enjoy the next 10 years, in all likelihood.

Since this isn't tRant, let's have an actual discussion.

You say:

Which of course I get, it's definitely a possibility that make a fail hire, etc. leading us down to TN levels of shite for the next 10 years.

However, at the same time, one cannot look at our record (especially SEC record) since 2012 and assume we would have enjoyed the next 10 years had we retained Les.

We basically were faced with two choices:

1. Keep Les, hope that maybe he turns the program around, despite all signs pointing to us getting worse and worse each year, or

2. Roll the dice and hope we come out on top.

If you hire Herman I'm interested to see the patience of the fanbase as you adjust to his offense. I think he could be great there, but the offensive transition will not happen overnight in all likelihood.

He stepped into a situation at UH where they ran a similar offense already and they had superior talent than almost everyone on their schedule. That won't be the case at LSU - you have a lot of talent but you can't just out-talent teams in the SEC West.

I agree and disagree. Obviously I wouldn't expect him to make a super-effective complete scheme change immediately (see Aranda this season) however I disagree with your thoughts on UH. UH had been running air raid for the last few years since Briles left. Herman was able to make the new scheme effective almost immediately. While yes, part of that is better talent than most on their schedule, but he also dispatched with FSU in the bowl game last season. I don't think that can be overlooked.

I could definitely see Herman winning 9-10 games his first year and then a contender in his second.

No one understands the situation y'all are in better than Aggies, I assure you. Our attitude with Slocum was absolutely the same, and with similar performance expectations. We celebrated getting rid of Slocum, but assumed we would instantly do better. Statistically speaking, it doesn't matter that Miles was declining, teams don't get better on that first hire after a long time winning coach except in rare occasions.

Long term, yeah, LSU may be better. Y'all certainly were topped out with Miles. But it's most likely that's 7-10 years away.

The celebration of LSU fans is what we find amusing. A grim determination to endure the journey until you find a good coach again is probably more realistic, and that's what took us a couple coaches to get to. We were excited by Fran, and were much more cautious with Sumlin and Sherman.

I pretty much agree with this. The simple fact is that Les Miles has demonstrated is unable or unwilling to assemble a complete team. When you have the same problem year after year, you have to decide whether you're satisfied with what you're going to get, or if you want to try for more.

Yes, we were in the same boat with Slocum. And like our experience with Fran, there's no guarantee that LSU makes a good hire. But LSU simply enjoys too many advantages to settle for 8-9 wins a season.

By the way, if Jimbo and Herman don't pan out, it actually wouldn't be a terrible idea to go back to the OSU well look into Mike Gundy. Long time recruiting ties in Texas, and a history of getting a lot out of the talent he lands.

I'm just not sure rolling the dice is a good idea with your AD. I get the decision to let Miles go

Cutcliffe was a pretty good hire for Duke.

JJ was obvi not a great hire for us though.

So...50/50 chance?

In the end it's all just football. Sure we can all get testy and competitive but it's just a game.

That is every coaching hire no matter the AD. Sometimes the golden child doesn't work out. Look at Penn St, look at Texas.
