It seems like the staff got interested in Kibodi at a satellite camp in Louisiana. Is he the only commit for 2017 that we have recruited as a result of exposure from a satellite camp?

Makes sense. I'd just rather take a 3-star now than end up under the 85 scholarship limit like we did this year. And if my count is right, we can take between 25-27 with this class.

Figure we try to close out with 1 more RB, 1 WR, 1 OL, 1-2 DT, and 2 LBs.

1) he could play defense or offense and may be recruited to play one or the other but will probably end up playing linebacker

2) it's really important for us to keep recruiting Louisiana as hard as we can

3) This staff is excellent at evaluating talent and finding underrated talent. If they are going after a guy who in,y has three stars early in the game it's because they see true potential.

3* or not

My official stance on 3*s is this:

A) If we take them early I am very happy to have them. That means the coaches evaluated them, decided they fit our scheme, and took them before anyone else wised up about them.

but

B) If we take a 3* late it is because we are filling roster spots with bodies and taking the best still available. That sucks.

Agreed. Besides we've had some pretty good success with 3* out of Louisiana. Starters include Shaan Washington, Donovan Wilson, and Colton Prater. Others like Kendall Bussey, Deshawn Capers-Smith, Claude George and T.D. Moton are either already in the 2-deep or figure to be in the next year or two.

George is a senior but he's been a great contributor this year. Plays with some serious fire. Was Gennesey originally from LA? I know we got him from a MS JUCO

For a team whose three of their greatest players were 3* recruits coming out of high school, we sure love complaining about getting 3* athletes.

Trayveon was a consensus 4*, but yeah, he's the first home run threat we've had in forever and is doing this as a fish, so he's performing like a 5*.

this kid has almost no P5 offers. Other coaches are not seeing what our staff is. So it's an odd take at this point. Doesn't make it wrong, just odd.

We'll just have to wait and see but it would be shocking and probably a signal people didn't care if no one was questioning it.

It surprises me that most on this board are loving 3 stars instead of 4 and 5 stars like Armani Watts and Myles Garret.

while I get your point...

Armani Watts

is a really poor example. He was a 3* across the board when we offered and he committed. No site rated him 4* until a full month after he committed to us and even then it was tepid (247 gave him a 90 rating which is the lowest 4* rating). It wasn't until after his senior season that his stock really jumped

ETA: it's hard to find other sites changing ratings but 247 documents theirs

November 07, 2012: Rating
Armani Watts rated 88 by 247Sports.

March 02, 2013: Commitment
Armani Watts commits to Texas A&M

March 20, 2013: Rating
Armani Watts rated 89 by 247Sports.

April 17, 2013: Rating
Armani Watts rated 90 by 247Sports.

July 01, 2013: Update
Armani Watts ran a 4.76 40 and 4.07 shuttle during SPARQ testing at The Opening

December 18, 2013: Accolades
Armani Watts was named an Associated Press Class 4A first-team all-state selection

December 23, 2013: Rating
Armani Watts rated 94 by 247Sports.

It's not that everyone "loves" every 3 star pickup, it's that anytime we get one it seems like there's an entire page of comments about how terrible we are at recruiting, we can't compete with the rest of the SEC with these recruits, we're just filling spots, etc. The negative reaction is just a little much sometimes.

I don't think the majority of posters here react that way, they certainly do on 247 though. The offer list is really important. A kid like Devin Morris is somehow a mid 3 star but has a 4 star offer list (Florida, Florida State, OU, Stanford, Tennessee)

If we took Kibodi as an athlete who may play LB then that makes more sense. He looks like he has athletic potential.

Well we are over midway through this classes senior season and our current class has
16 composite 3*
6 composite 4* players
not a single 5* prospect committed.

That trend is not good. But honestly if we close with Johnson (LB) Hines (LB) Wilson (DT) and Sheffield (CB) I'll be thrilled. That's a nasty defensive haul combined with others who are already committed like Tucker (S) etc.
