The official reason is his dad is ill.
What I've heard is they promised they wouldn't redshirt him and then he got hurt in fall camp. They made the call to shirt him knowing full well he might transfer.
Some of the OSU people are suggesting their coaches weren't too high on him or the relationship is just frayed. Sometimes in situations like that a fresh start can do wonders.

I would be shocked if Mitchell ended up anywhere but SMU.

That's what I thought too, along with prolly TCU. But his first visit was to Tech and he apparently liked them. So if he's considering Lubbock you gotta think he's considering A&M

Keenan Walker OT from Arizona committed to Arizona. Not sure who else or how many we really want on o-line this year, but most have already committed at this point

Kyler committing may lead to a domino effect honestly. Lodge and Kirk have both mentioned Kyler's choice being important to them. I know Kirk is planning to wait and Lodge wants to take visits, but the point is that Kyler is like a HS version of Johnny in Texas. Everyone wants to play with him. He's iconic as a 16-year old. And it's going to impact a lot of other players because they know we'll be good.
