My friend in the AD (the one who told me about Chavis) says this is more about Kevin Murray than Kyler. Apparently all that "propaganda" about the elder Murray not liking Sumlin was true and it hit a tipping point for whatever reason this past week and it REALLY pissed off the family.

This would be the second five-star recruit in a little over a month Sumlin himself has single-handedly pushed away.

Lodge is the least important because our chances of getting Merritt just went up. Mack and Little hurt like hell. I don't think Hill and Boyd are that tied to Kyler. Hill was a sip lean to begin with and Boyd does what he wants. I still think we have a good shot at Boyd regardless. Close with Boyd, Sheffield, Martin, Merritt, Bussey, and Helms, and that's a damn good class.

I've always thought Sumlin seemed like a weasel, so it doesn't surprise me that he doesn't get along with everyone. If he stops being an ace recruiter, that is a huge problem though. That's pretty much the only thing he's got going right now.

That's the only explanation, either that or Kevin M. is about to be named qb coach at UT. And he will get to coach Kyler.

This makes more sense than any other theory. Start from day 1 AND have your dad as coach. That actually makes the most sense

Yep, Bucky7. And because the Allen coaches are A&M guys, it's crushing them too.

Agree with you. Radio silence from our end - with the occasional cautiously worded posts from Hamm and Looch - speak volumes.

If Kevin fricking Murray becomes the QB coach for Texas, all of our momentum is officially gone.

I don't think he's a weasel, I just think he's a true alpha male who doesn't give a shite what others want from him. It's funny in press conferences, but in the recruiting game that can be detrimental. 90% of the coaches in America would have made up some bullshite story and landed Malik, he didn't. For better or worse.

Merritt not making it in doesn't mean much. It just would've meant a lot if he had. Would've been an unofficial visit so family was reluctant to pay their own way. A&M is very much in play with Merritt. His biggest concern is the depth chart. Lodge not coming improves that aspect.

So what exactly has been Kevin's problem with Kevin?

I see what you are saying. I have pretty much considered Sumlin a weasel ever since the Florida/Louisiana Tech suspension situation. It wasn't just the way he handled it. It was the way he answered media questions about it. But I have no problem having a weasel head coach. Meyer and Saban are the two biggest weasels in college football.

I don't know, if Malik wanted to know the name of the DC, what bullshite story could Sumlin give him? He either tells Malik it is Chavis and risks killing that deal, or he does what he did.

Malik was already headed to austin, and was trying to get info about the potential DC, in order to potentially block it.

Kyler and crew are payback.

I think a big part of the problem is that both are uniquely strong personalities and those type of people tend to butt heads. Charlie Strong, for all the Texas talk about being a tough guy, is a people pleaser at heart willing to tell people what they want to hear. He has a façade of toughness that doesn't really hold up in real world scenarios. Meanwhile, Sumlin more or less coyly tells a reporter to frick off about once per press conference and is notoriously confrontational.

I also know that Murray has never thought much of Sumlin's handling of the social aspects of his teams. Beyond that I don't know.

Or he talks to him like a human being, and explains he is about to land a huge name, but he has promised not to tell a soul.

I actually really don't like how Sumlin answers questions sometimes. There is no need to be a jerk. Reporters are just doing their jobs. Coaches like Cal and Brad Stevens handle press conferences and media interviews the best IMO.

Agree with all of this. If Sumlin wins games though, I don't really care what he does in all honesty. But with the lack of wins, I am getting a bit frustrated with his arrogance.

Kevin Sumlin is a 50 year old major college football coach with a college degree, 25 years of experience and a $5 million salary. Malik Jefferson is a 17 year old high school senior who is about as worldly as Carlton Banks.

If our coach can't win that bluffing contest if he chose to try then we have much bigger issues than pissing off 5 star recruits.

Yeah, if the visit with Spav went well, we would have gotten some kind of word

This is another deal I don't get. Not much different than "Kyler could put this all to rest if he'd come out and say...". First, you're assuming that Kyler reads message boards to get all his news rather than, you know, being a kid. And then you have to assume that he or his dad would give a shite what the high blood pressure fans think. Same now with Spavital. Neither of those guys owe anybody an explanation. The only actual quote we have from anybody important over the last few days is "I'm committed to A&M". WTF is wrong with Aggies? Seriously.
