Yep.
With as many WRs as we've taken over the last couple of years, never would I have thought that we're in danger of looking thin at the position.

Does anyone know what Burton said about Malik?
quote:
Mesquite Poteet linebacker Malik Jefferson has been leaning heavily to Texas A&M since his official visit to the Aggies in November. Texas A&M has still not named a defensive coordinator, yet A&M leads. Think about that. Quite the sales job by Kevin Sumlin.
What are the Aggies pitching to Jefferson?
A&M is telling Jefferson that he is the final piece to the puzzle. The Aggies are telling him they have a lot of the pieces but they need him to put them over the top, and they need him to do it as soon as next year.
Of course, that's not all they're saying and it's not an uncommon approach by coaching staffs that have recruited star players. But it's simply a key part of the overall sales job of Sumlin and assistant Mark Hagen. But it is not just the Aggie coaches involved in the recruitment of Jefferson. Jefferson has also kept in close contact with a couple of current A&M players since his visit, more so than he has any Longhorn players. Jefferson also remains close with Allen QB Kyler Murray, who is pushing Jefferson and others, like receivers Damarkus Lodge and Christian Kirk to A&M. (I know Lodge de-committed, but A&M is still very much in play there.) On top of that, Jefferson's girlfriend is expected to enroll at A&M. Add it all up, and Texas A&M, even without a defensive coordinator currently, is likely to land Malik Jefferson.
Jefferson will visit UCLA this weekend. And as one college coach told me last weekend, he feels Jefferson is more of an A&M-UCLA battle then Texas actually being under legitimate consideration. Jefferson plans to announce his decision Dec. 19 -- a week from Friday. If the Aggies don't have a coordinator by this time next week, then maybe that grows into a concern. But Sumlin has convinced Jefferson that he won't have an issue with the new coordinator because his position coach (Hagen) won't change
Is Texas throwing in the towel? Of course not. That's why Strong and Vance Bedford made their way to Mesquite today to spend time with Jefferson. Strong, during his time as head coach at Louisville, was known to pull off some last-minute shockers.
I think Texas has put its best foot forward, but I just don't think this one is in the cards for the Horns. We'll see what happens in eight days. That's nearly a lifetime in the recruiting world, especially with that trip to LA looming this weekend.

Thank you for posting. ^ That's shocking. I thought that ship sailed a long time ago.

it mostly shows how out of touch Burton is tbh
I will say that a new WR coach and area recruiter moves it from impossible all the way up to extremely unlikely

My guess is 0% chance Lodge comes to A&M

If we miss on Kirk and Merritt, are there others we are targeting? Looks like McNeal is going to be a WR in college.

Yeah I think he lost his source(s) when Mack Brown left.

Marvell Tell is having his official visit this weekend, and his mom will be coming with him.
In what could turn out to be huge, Terry Godwin is between ND and A&M for his final visit. Widely considered the best "ATH" in the country

So Malik, Jordan Davis and Christian Kirk are making apartment plans with each other on twitter. Davis told Texags as far as he knows both are coming to A&M.

We already have Ratley and Siverand on board so it's not exactly like we have to have a WR. We're thin there but imo it's not critical. I'm sure the staff would like at least one more but given how tight spots are this year and needs at other positions, it would hardly shock me if we passed if we miss on the primaries

That or h-back. I think both he and Davis make a great combo because they could both be outside WRs and both could be TE/H types. They give a lot more flexibility to us. We shouldn't be using an OL or a walk-on fullback in critical points but we did all year. It really takes a weapon off the field.
To me it's a need and I think McNeal would fill it nicely whereas Davis could learn the role but play mostly inline or outside. It gives you two guys with different skill sets but they could both cross-train at the other (H vs TE) so that if someone got hurt you aren't up shite creek creating entirely new sets on the fly. And a set with both gives you just a ton of flexibility.

If you were A&M, would you play McNeal on offense or defense?

Ideally def IMO but he's good enough for either.
Curious about the 247 article about Riley Garner's future. Anyone have insight??

Given our needs, I'd probably play him on defense but he prefers to play offense and I think we'll give him first crack there. He'll be very good on offense. And he's a little undersized for OLB in the SEC anyway so longterm his upside probably isn't as high.

Haha I misunderstood. I thought you were posing your question about McNeal to all to see their opinion of where we'd like to see him play.

thought that's what he meant too.....what do you think now?
here's the summary on Garner from your 247 link
quote:
“I’m 100-percent healed now,” he said. “I was cleared for working out about six weeks ago and I got my last precautionary MRI results back about a couple days ago and they called us back and said everything looks fine. They will clear me for full contact on my next visit which is January 1st.”

I think no one cares what I think

He could be a 2-way player like Miles Jack from UCLA or Chris Gamble from Ohio State.
