Noble is quite the character. Look him up. He's buddies with Steven Furtick. Lots of what they preach is heretical to traditional Protestant theology, but it's popular with a certain segment of evangelical Southerners. He was instrumental in implementing the megachurch culture into the Clemson program alongside Dabo.

They were just willing to pay more because that period of CFB suppressed the price per player. With the current market, Clemson just doesn't have a very big alumni base with money.

On top of the alleged megachurch shite I would think this is a huge part of it.
They were absolutely raiding Georgia, Watson and Lawrence were Georgia boys you gotta think Kirby gets at least one of them had he been coach.
