A dynamic African American coach with a flashy offense may make a dent in recruiting the offensive skill postions kids from East Texas.
The trend is happening @ Penn State the new coach with a non stone age offense is getting verbal from kids that previously would not be interested in the old boring system.
ETA The nation's number one wide out decommited from Texas I would not be suprised if he end up in Sumlin's offense

For the record.... just about every recruit we picked up that was wavering to other big powerhouse schools said, "I want to play in the SEC..."
It's fresh at the moment and Texas and OU have been bad which will change soon.

I was really shocked at the comments of the kids we landed. For the record, we had one of the best recruiting classes we have ever seen, and we didn't even use all our scholarships. Sumlin said he wanted to hold some spots back to see what we needed later. I think it was a wise choice on his part really.
Texas A&M has ALWAYS recruited well and it's no different today. You can't chest pump about classes until you have another 10 win season in this league.

I'd say we've always recruited in the top 25 for sure, but I think we've put up a top 10 class (even if it was short a few scholarships).
We've have record numbers of early verbal commitments.
I am not saying it will stay this way, but there is not a doubt in my mind that our recruiting has stepped up a lot as a result of joining the SEC.

Possibly. Conversely, it could be beneficial - with guys getting two guaranteed games in their home state it can be a recruiting tool.
Good point

It seems to me that LSU gets a lot of it recruits from East Texas, and there advantage is that LSU was in the SEC and A&M was in the BIG 12
so the only differenc between LSU and aTm over the last 10 years is that LSU is an SEC school?
wow

I think it will help aTm some, but I can promise you, it aint hurting LSU.
It will take alot of more than a mediocre big 12 program joining the SEC to hurt LSUs recruiting. LSU has a huge presence in East texas.

I never said it hurts LSU. I just know for a FACT it has helped a&m so far. Don't read into my comments.
One thing Jackie Sherrill said today in that phone interview is that Arkie and LSU will actually benefit from these changes. Mizzou will as well. OU and OSU will suffer some now that TCU is back in the mix for texas kids, and A&M and Mizzou are SEC bound.

If anything, I think it helps LSU in recruiting.
The Houston area has always been a battle between us and A&M. We will still get a good amount of players from there. Kids are guaranteed to play in Texas, at least twice. The difference in time from College Station to Houston and the LA border to Houston is minimal.
Houston is the major city that we are competing with atm for, which is filled with LSU folks, and LSU already recruits heavily. Already, deep east TX has a great deal of LSU folks.
At the end of the day, we will still get what we need out of Texas.

you referring to the recruiting class this year? Sumlin is recruiting lights out 2013. You guys have to be happy about it so far.

True, but he could also end up at LSU.

Just based on a 5 month window, the move by TAM has actually helped LSU recruiting. We're getting a great response in Texas this year and next year will be even bigger. LSU's success will be and always has been determined by the level of talent in LA and us keeping it home. If LA is down talentwise then LSU's recruiting is down.

Especially with the academics A&M has. I mean being in the SEC and go to a school which is ranked in the top 10 for universities in the south, hell I'd go there
you don't know much about college jocks do you. a&m is extremely highly rated in engineering and the sciences, esp. their graduate schools. just how many football players are attracted to the post graduate engineering and science ranking of their school? care to make a guess? most of the other programs are pretty much equal. LSU has a law school, a medical school and a dental school; none of which a&m has. so how many high school football players do you think that will attract? both schools recruit the same players and i will just say there probably isn't one, or certainly more than one that give a rat's arse about getting a masters in biology or a law degree. the football players WANT THE NFL. period.

just an addition to my latest response. LSU doesn't live or die in texas. we recruit very well in the south. tennessee, south carolina, north carolina, georgia and florida. no, we don't sign a ton of guys from any one of those states, gut collectively we get a few VERY GOOD players every year. great supplement to what we produce and sign in louisiana. those 5 states mentioned above are more important to us than tejas.

He could end up at Penn State too but based on his postion and Sumlin's propensity to throw the ball I will not discount A&M.

Grandad, a lot of people here don't have a clue about our recruiting. Texas has over 250 prospects a year. LSU signs, on average, 3 TX players a year. LSU's last 6 commitments, this year, are all from out of state. Only 1 is from TX.
LSU has always signed most of the top LA kids, a few from TX, a few from GA, a few from FL, and a few from MS. That is not going to change one bit with A&M in the conference.
And, yes, you are dead on with the fact that football prospects don't give a damn about how good your engineering and your pre-med programs are.

For the record, this is false. We have both a medical school and a dental school, but neither are directly a part of the main campus in College Station. Both are part of the A&M system, although there has been talk to incorporate the medical school with main campus. We also have the best vet school in the country, which is under the main campus.
We don't have a law school because of an agreement with Texas: we got the only vet school and they got the only law school.

It's kind of crazy how many people I meet that believe or insist that A&M doesn't have a medical school. I'm not sure why that belief exists
