We've been the victim of a kid falsely accusing us of something (Chris Steele) in order to play immediately, I'm not sure we should foment the same type of behavior in other recruits.

For me, the growing list of recruits leaving schools for bullshite reasons and trying to use those reasons to play early is not a road I want to travel in the future.

Tom Mars is pretty much the expert on whether it's possible for kids to get the waiver at this point... he also now works for the NCAA...

quote:

“Unless there’s some well-kept secret that would qualify him for a waiver, I’d say chances of Brenton Cox getting a waiver are approximately zero,” Mars told the AJC on Tuesday.

Not that I give a rats arse if the kid plays this year or not, (I don't think he should be able to play) Mars should keep his filthy lawyer mouth shut about any ongoing cases before the NCAA since he is now part of the process, imo.

Now that he has put that statement out there, he will most obviously try his best to kill any chance the kid had at getting the waiver just to save face.

I just don't think he had a reasonable case... not to mention there's a second level of clearance due to the intra-conference transfer that he just isn't likely to meet...

Edit: Had misread the second factor in an article earlier today... this was a more clear breakdown of the 2 situations that the SEC has provided exceptions for intraconference transfer:

quote:

Another hurdle Florida will have a hard time clearing is the SEC's intraconference transfer requirements. Moving from one conference institution to another another requires a second waiver from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.

The league last year adopted two exceptions that allow immediate eligibility: One, is for the player to have graduated with a degree, the other is if the school the student-athlete is leaving is being sanctioned for major NCAA violations. Neither of those exceptions apply here.

Regardless of what Tom Mars says or does, there was a zero point zero percent chance that UGA is going to support a waiver for the kid... You wanna transfer, go for it, but if you transfer within the division, it would be odd to expect favors from the staff you didn't respect while you were on campus to begin with.

The problem is that coaches will openly lament the transfer portal because it encourages quitters and blah blah blah but then they’ll actively encourage potential transfers into their program to play victim as best they can to get immediate eligibility. The supposed adults in the room are behaving like children.

Which makes it all the more puzzling why Mullen said publicly that he thinks Cox gets the waiver. There’s no reason to expect that and, once again, Mullen is going to get slammed for opening his mouth. Maybe he’s setting up for a “well this is bullshite and think of the kids” tirade but I don’t think it’ll be that well received

I wasn't supporting it. I think it's nonsense and a pussy way to do it..but it works. Exploit the system if it's broken.

To finally get that elusive 5 star, He probably lied to him about having a great shot getting a waiver, and he had to “save face” when asked about it in public.

Interesting article came out just 2 days after this.....

And as soon as players enter the transfer portal, other coaches call with the pitch: Transfer here and we’ll get you a waiver. These coaches don’t know if a waiver is justified. Many of them don’t even understand the rule. They just know what the players want to hear.

“Part of the recruiting pitch is, ‘You come here, we’ll get you a waiver,’” Mars says. “I’m not speculating. I know it is (happening). Parents call me 15 minutes after leaving the coach’s office.”

The waivers are getting handed out left and right. Hell, even Justin Fields got a waiver when he really didn't deserve to get one.

The transfer from ohio state to TCU (Baldwin?) did not get one. The NCAA also hasn’t ruled yet on the one so transferred to UNC to be closer to sick family (I believe his mom?). Any coach publicly boasting that they’re going to get a kid the waiver is blowing smoke.
