Defensive toughness is one thing, but when you play a brutal conference schedule and you're not very talented, you wear down quickly.

To that extent, the greatness of Sumlin and Manziel is that they were able to hold the line until reinforcements arrived.

2010: Texas A&M (9-4), Texas (5-7)
2011: Texas A&M (7-6), Texas (8-5)
2012: Texas A&M (11-2), Texas (9-4)
2013: Texas A&M (9-4), Texas (8-5)

One program went 36-16 over four years while significantly upgrading their competition in year 3, the other went 30-21 over four years while significantly DOWNGRADING their competition in year 3 even when it appeared they were stacking the deck in their favor.

And more people watched A&M-OM than Texas-OU.

A&M was the second most-watched team in 2013. Texas was somewhere just inside the top 25.

Come on man, do you really think people are tuning in for the pageantry of A&M, or do you think they tuned in to see Bama vs. JFF?

Absent another superstar of that caliber, A&M, a relatively banal program (don't take offense, plenty of good programs are in that category), is not going to maintain that type of momentum.

9 wins this year will do a lot to prove A&M is a legit year in and year out contender in the SEC.

I appreciate that, but if A&M wins 9 games check back here. The conversation will not be that A&M is legit, it will be that A&M hasn't won anything and they had 4 cupcakes and a bowl game so 9 wins isnt anything special...blah blah. People have already made up their minds about A&M as a football program and no amount of success (even a national championship) would change that. The narrative and goal posts would just continue to shift until it meets their perception.

The fact that 9 wins is a disappointment is a sign that we've greatly improved.

9 wins in the Big 12 is good enough to win the conference (had Texas beaten Baylor last year, they win the Big 12 and get raped by Bortles and UCF in the Fiesta)

9 wins in the SEC is middle of the pack. Last decade, we would pop the champaigne for a 9 win season.

That's why ESPN did a whole thing for us on sportscenter for our manzielless opening day of spring camp.

The largest market for A&M games, was AUSTIN, by far.

The same is true with anyone, barring some luck.

Florida after Tebow.

Auburn after Cam.

Texas after Colt/Young.

USC began a steady descent after Bush/Leinart.

Obviously when transcendent/polarizing talent leaves, no program is immune from the effects. And those programs necessarily become less interesting to the masses.

When was the last time Alabama had a "transcendent talent"? Mark Ingram doesn't count.

If your fans here didn't beat their chests so much about "proving the sec rant wrong" and about whatever happened last year that makes you so confident others wouldn't feel the need to tell you to win something first.

A&M has improved greatly, and is a better program than texas going into this season. However the weakness on defense shown over two years is concerning. And Texas has a big name, with a new coach who was pretty hot. It doesn't take a lot for a big name to get some momentum and the status of program can change all too quickly as you A&M fans should be well aware.

The responses in this thread are predictable as hell.

Most of you know little to nothing about Texas A&M University and/or the University of Texas.
Yet you jump on-board the insult bus.
Both flagships in Texas are tremendous universities.
And most recruits are very happy with their choice of school.

You can carve out a single exception.

But unless you've hired arguably the greatest coach in history, you're not immune.

Fair?

Besides, you don't have great, iconic players.

Very wrong.

that is great, did you have any confidence in your defense at the end of games or were you just hoping JFF could hold you in it?

if everyone one here and in the media didn't lose their minds about how bad we would be, we wouldnt have been beating our chests in the first place
