They’re signing and the voluntarily opting out of their scholarships, but staying on the roster. That answers it.

Nope. You should've clicked on this link: (additional explanation)

Please call the recruiting services and tell them how they got it all wrong; you know, with your vast knowledge of the game and all.

Interesting read. Not 100% sure I follow that. In theory, since Justin Fields and Brenton Cox both transferred out from UGA, if we had recruits join the team but not sign aid/NLI's then those spaces could be used if a kid is willing to pay for an abbreviated term? I'm not sure whether UGA even offers much in the way of these abbreviated term lengths referenced, but it's been over a decade since I took classes there too at this point.

Kid is not a burner. Monken will probably use him like Kamara or try to. Lastly Colquitt Co. plays a hellish schedule.

Those South GA schools got some Friday Night Lights thing going on with recruiting and paying the best coaches they can acquire.

The gist is the same. They are on Bama’s roster, but don’t count against the scholarship limit.

It’s basically getting kids to walk on and then getting them a scholarship when another player voluntarily leaves. Not exactly the same, but very similar.

If a program can get recruits to do that, power to them.

Voluntary Withdrawal replacement scholarships don't toward the 25 per academic year signings and initial counters limits, but they do count toward the 85 total counters limit.

That's exactly what I said. They are on Bama's roster but don't count against the available scholarships in a recruiting cycle.

They're essentially walkons for the class.

Out of curiosity, how does that mesh with the whole "can't give walk-on's a scholarship before 2 years or they have to be ICs" rule?

That was an issue for Stetson Bennett, and it was also the reason for delaying putting Hot Rod on scholarship.

Something seems in conflict there unless I'm misunderstanding.

It's 1 year now.

And the idea that voluntary withdrawal helps a program take more than 25 ICs in a year doesn't make sense to me. I think it only helps manage the numbers under the 85 limit.

I'm guessing these guys aren't actually considered walk ons, but some other classification.

I'm really not sure.

NCAA Signing/Counter Limits

The Voluntary Withdrawal (15.5.6.4.1) rule is an Exception rule that allows walkons to receive replacement scholarships for players who voluntarily withdraw from the football team and the university. The rule states that a walkon can receive the replacement scholarship for any term following the inital fall term that the withdrawal preceded without having been a walkon for 1 year. The loophole is built into the rule. A few Bama recruits have utilized that loophole.

Yeah. Someone.

I didn't realize at the time Alabama was dropping Jayson Jones. Hey. It happens.

If reasonably knowledgeable fans confidently post how many recruits their team can take, I tend to just take their word for it. We'll find out on NSD anyway how many kids teams actually sign.

Jayson Jones can accept a greyshirt offer from Bama to play OL, or another offer from another school. I'm thinking that he'll probably sign with Oregon. We'll see what he actually does on NSD.
