I have too much baseball swing in my golf swing. I've worked on it and just can never get it down completely. Maybe one of these days it will click for me. I love going out with a couple buddies and a cooler of beer though.

It's well-known that our opportunities to hear from one of Nick Saban's assistant coaches are rare, so an interview like the one new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier did this morning with Mobile's WNSP, especially at this time of the year, is always worth breaking down word by word.

Even when he doesn't reveal a single thing about his plans for Alabama's offense in 2012. Instead, Nussmeier offered a joke.

"We'll just have to wait until September 1 and see how it unveils as the season goes," Nussmeier said. "I think we'll just take all the plays we ran last year and put them in a big bin and just pull them out one by one and recycle them."

Clearly, Nussmeier was on the same page as Saban was when he faced a similar question after the A-Day game.

Anyways, Nussmeier hit on a number of other topics while promoting his appearance at Thursday's DEX Imaging L'Arche Football Dinner -- which will be held at the University of South Alabama's Mitchell Center.

On whether AJ McCarron is an "elite" quarterback: "When you start talking about elite quarterbacks, everybody has an opinion and everybody has certain players they like and dislike. I think when you look at AJ and the progression he made from the start of the season last season to the end and where he started spring football, where he ended spring football, he just continues to get better and better each day. I really believe he's got a lot of upside still left in him and some things technically he can work on. I think you'll see his game continue to elevate."

On Alabama's stable of running backs: "Obviously we didn't have Eddie Lacy in the spring but Eddie's a very, very good football player and I'm really, really excited to get him back. Jalston Fowler had a really, really good spring for us. Really looking forward to what he brings to the table. You've got Dee Hart. He's not the biggest guy in the world but has great acceleration and is good out of the backfield receiving. T.J. (Yeldon) coming in as a true freshman and his first spring, I thought really did some outstanding things and I think he's got a high, high ceiling."

On the offensive line: "I've never been fortunate enough to be around one like this. Really, really good group of guys. Extremely hard workers. They're big, they're physical. Very, very excited about what they bring to the table."

On playing under Arkansas' John L. Smith at Idaho: "It's pretty interesting to go back to my past, my first year at the University of Idaho. I was in Coach Smith's first recruiting class there and my quarterback coach there was Bob Petrino. When you go through the past, it's kind of interesting. I still talk to Coach frequently. He's been a wonderful influence in my life. Obviously on that Saturday, I sure don't want to lose to him and I know he doesn't want to lose to me. It would be a little something special there. I'm excited for Coach that he got that opportunity. Obviously that's going to be a big, big game for us."

On the difference of recruiting in the SEC compared to the Pac-12: "As you look across the country everywhere, geographically, you look at your roster. We talk about a five-hour radius here from our university and the quality of football players there are here. Being at the University of Washington, basically on the opposite coast, it's a different pool of recruiting, so to say, and a different kind of recruiting in the SEC, different types of players, different styles of both conferences when you look at the Pac-12 and look at the SEC. There's been some adjustment there but, like I said, very very excited to be apart of this."

On another note, Drac is about to break, I can feel it.

When choosing the top three corners of the Nick Saban era, three things were taken into account: coverage skills, versatility and toughness.

While he may not have ranked at the top of the list as cover guy, you would be hard pressed to find another UA corner since 2007 who surpassed Javier Arenas in the other two departments. The Tampa native wasn't the biggest or fastest corner to make the list, just the best all-around football player.

1.] Javier Arenas (2006-2009)
Why he's here: Perhaps the most versatile performer of the Saban era, Arenas played both inside at star in the nickel and dime packages and outside at left corner in the base. Made 28 starts while at UA, recording eight interceptions, 154 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. And have we mentioned that he was a pretty good return guy, too?
Claim to fame: Permanent team captain and second-team All-America selection in 2009.
Memorable moment: VIDEO: Arenas picks off Tebow.
Next level: Selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round (No. 50 overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. Appeared in 31 games in first two seasons as a pro, recording 76 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions. Also an option on kickoff and punt returns.

2.] Dre Kirkpatrick (2009-2011)
Why he's here: In terms of size and speed, Kirkpatrick represents the prototype Saban corner. Took on more of a physical presence during his two seasons as a starter, especially when looking up receivers on crossing routes while in zone coverage. Recorded 91 tackles, including eight for loss, three interceptions and 16 pass breakups for his career.
Claim to fame: Thorpe Award finalist and first-team All-America selection in 2011.
Memorable moment: VIDEO: Kirkpatrick vs. Arkansas 2011
Next level: Selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round (No. 17 overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.

3.] Kareem Jackson (2007-2009)
Why he's here: Stepped on campus in the spring of 2007 and proceeded to lock down the right corner spot for the next three seasons. Made 40 career starts, posting 159 tackles, including eight for loss, 29 pass breakups and five interceptions.
Claim to fame: Freshman All-SEC and Freshman All-America in 2007. Jackson's 29 career pass breakups rank fourth on UA’s all-time list
Memorable moment: VIDEO: Alabama stuffs Ole Miss
Next level: Selected by the Houston Texans in the first round (No. 20 overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. Made 29 starts in first two seasons as a pro, recording 113 tackles and three interceptions.

Next three: DeQuan Menzie (2010-2011); Dee Milliner (2010-present); Simeon Castille (2004-2007)/Marquis Johnson (2006-2009).

If I had to guess it would be something along the lines of:

Rueben to trooper: I'm definitely interested but I want to take my time

Rueben to Tray: Man im going to bama

Trooper to Tray: Ruebens coming here, join him man and we'll have the best defense in country

Let's get some discussion going in here. For those that didn't see this posted the other day:

quote:

Sources told CBSSports.com that the SEC is expected to announce the league's scheduling opponents for the next 12 years and that the rotating cross division game will be a one-year rotation instead of a two-year home and home rotation.

Who would everyone like to face first from the East? Obviously we are keeping our annual rivalry game against Tennessee and we get to play Mizzou this season, which I am also excited about. Who do you hope we get next year?

I'll take UGA. Second choice would be USCe.

My choices were based on having played everyone already since we last played UGA, and USCe because they kicked our arse last time we played them.

Alabama will host its first summer camp beginning Sunday, but the biggest visitor next week won’t be camping. Five-star offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil is scheduled to visit Tuscaloosa from Sunday to Tuesday, but he’s not expected to participate in the camp. Instead, he will get a full tour of the campus and the facilities and meet with the UA coaching staff. It will be Tunsil’s first visit to Alabama. On Tuesday, he talked with Jeff Stoutland, the Tide’s offensive line coach, who wants to sit down, watch film and break down the left tackle position. The trip will be his first of the summer, but he wants to visit Ole Miss, South Carolina and USC soon. The Florida native has also shown interest in Florida, Florida State, Georgia and LSU.

--------------------------------------------------

In a battle between Alabama and Florida, the Crimson Tide have to feel good about another Florida native, defensive end Demarcus Walker. UA recently beat out Florida for defensive end/linebacker Jonathan Allen, and the same may hold true for Walker. Sources say that had Walker stuck with his original announcement date last week, he would’ve committed to Alabama. However, he pushed back the decision, leaving the door open for the Gators to make up some ground. Walker may visit both schools again this summer and wait to make a decision during his senior season at Sandalwood High School.

--------------------------------------------------

Defensive back Brendan Langley surprised everybody last week when he announced a new top three, and Georgia, his former leader, was left off of it. Langley wouldn’t go into detail as to why Georgia dropped out but did say Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee are his new top schools with the Crimson Tide taking over as the new leader. The Georgia native plans to visit Tuscaloosa this weekend after he competes in a 7-on-7 tournament at Central Gwinnett High School on Saturday. Depending on how he feels, he may compete in the Tide’s camp on Sunday. Langley visited Alabama this spring for one of its earlier scrimmages, and he’s looking forward to coming back.

“I’m just looking forward to spending some time with everybody, all the players, all the coaches and get a better feel for everybody,” Langley said. “I’ve already seen everything I need to see. I don’t need to see anything else. I just want to build a relationship with everybody over there.”

*Langley plans to announce his college decision on August 25 at the Georgia Dome where Kell High School plays its first regular season game.

--------------------------------------------------

Although Alabama picked up a commitment from quarterback Cooper Bateman earlier this month, the Crimson Tide would like add another signal caller in this class, and two names have emerged, Riley Ferguson and Parker McLeod. Ferguson was a top target before Bateman committed, and he still remains interested in the Tide. He’s scheduled to arrive at UA next Tuesday to compete in the camp and throw in front of head coach Nick Saban. McLeod landed what many considered to be a surprise offer from Alabama last week. He’s also expected to throw at the camp and could pull the trigger if he likes what he sees and hears from the coaching staff. Don’t be surprised if Alabama leaves the camp with a second quarterback in the class.

Ferguson: “There’s going to be competition everywhere. Honestly, I just think of it like I’m fighting for a position. I definitely want to be the guy wherever I go, but you’re going to have to work for that.”

McLeod: “Coach Saban and Coach [Doug] Nussmeier have all been telling me they don’t see it as I’m the second guy. They see it as they’re taking two quarterbacks, and we’ll both have our shots to compete against each other. One’s not really ahead of the other.”
